Super excited to share that my book on network analysis and visualization as a method for book history will be out soon!! It's basically a how-to-start guide for book historians interested in networks 😃 www.arc-humanities.org/978180270268... #dh #bookhistory #firstbook #medievalsky

Driving there, sometimes late at night, with no gas stations at all and no stores for hours, always fearing running out of water or diesel, was unforgettable. I couldn't stop wondering how people once transported thousands of manuscripts to the library in Tamgrūt. It still amazes me.

My article on the library of the Sufi brotherhood al-Nāṣiriyya in Tamgrūt, a small village in the far south of Morocco, has finally been published. Founded in the 17th century, with more than 4,700 manuscripts still in place, it is a fascinating institution. Take a look! dx.doi.org/10.1163/1878...

My article on al-Yusi, Thomas Browne, and Basho just appeared in Modern Philology!! This was a labor of love and had me stepping outside my comfort zone. A few words on what I was trying to do here (message me for a pdf): 1/ www-journals-uchicago-edu.proxy.library.nyu.edu/doi/full/10....

Thinking of the mentor who made me a historian. True, I wanted to be an academic historian since I was 12, but someone taught me what that means at 19. That someone is Chester Dunning. Prof of early modern Russian history at Texas A&M. I’ll never stop being grateful to him. Who’s your inspiration?

Have y'all seen this? 😱 Instant access, beautiful interface. There is even a link between the OCR text and the PDF file! Fantastic! (I hope the @openiti.bsky.social project is on board and has consented to the use of its corpus?) usul.ai

So this is really cool: a stamp impression from the library of the Ilkhanid vizier Rashid al-Din (d. 1318). It reads “pious endowment [waqf] of the Rashidiyya library,” & it may have been inspired by Chinese prints/stamps. Stamped waqf notices are totally unheard of for this time!

Ermita de San Sebastián. Originally built as a rabita (probably the tomb of a marabout) in 1218 by Ishaq b. Yusuf, Almohad governor of the city. It is said that it was here that Boabdil, the last sultan of Granada, handed over the keys of the city to the Catholic Monarchs #Al-Andalus ##medievalsky

Has anyone heard of silk production in Fez? I thought that the ṣināʿat al-ḥarīr in which some of the Qādirī Ashrāf in Fez seem to have been engaged might actually mean ḥadīd. But I have now found that some ashrāf in Ottoman Damascus were involved in silk weaving. So it could be?

New article alert! Ibn Khaldūn’s Muqaddima offers the most extended reading of a series of maps known from medieval literature. In this article, Alfred Hiatt parses Ibn Khaldūn’s text alongside manuscripts of al-Idrīsī’s 12th-cent. geography, prompting questions about Ibn Khaldūn’s art of history

In the city of Karlsruhe it seems like AfD members put these "deportation tickets" in the mailboxes of people with migration background. Among other things we read "only remigration can save Germany". The ominous date on the ticket corresponds to the election day, February 23d 2025.

Spread word! Peter Van Nuffelen is recruiting two postdocs for his ERC Advanced Grant project 'New Polities. Political Thought in the First Millennium'. The candidates should have experience with Hebrew, Middle-Persian or Arabic sources. Ghent and its university come highly recommended.

2025, the year in which I will hopefully finish the first complete draft of my dissertation. 🚀

I have now read the first 150 pages of this book. And I can say that I have never enjoyed reading a book more. It is fun to read, encompasses so much stuff I did not know about, and it addresses a lot of questions and thoughts I have had over the last few years. Wonderful!

A widely used #Christmas time special of the European past was to buy and wear a paper crown. A paper crown, #skystorians? Yes, a printed paper crown. And the tiny street seller highlighted in this #earlymodern painting is selling them. Let's have a festive 🧵
