Polisky Dictatorsky Join us tomorrow to close our Spring 2025 season!

every gender transition is a statement in favor of human possibility and freedom and i’m tired of hearing it talked about like it’s some kind of disease

Join ACH, AHA, & MLA to talk about the appeals process for terminated NEH grants. Why is it important to appeal and how might you go about doing so? 11am Eastern on Wed, April 30. Please share!

Saw "Margin Call" after @qjurecic.bsky.social described it as the best movie about the 2008 financial crisis ever made on Lawfare & I totally get it now. But I am confused why it's been completely eclipsed by "The Big Short" in public perception, which left much less of an impression on me.

Great report that largely confirms what we have found for other countries. 1) Potential losses to Reform are dwarved by potential losses to Greens/LibDems. 2) Moving right on immigration has very small effect on retaining potential Reform voters. Net gains/losses largely cancel each other out.

yesterday, my postdoc funding (salary and research funds) was cancelled by the National Science Foundation, effective immediately. I received the same generic, vaguely threatening, typo-ridden email as many of my colleagues who have had their awards terminated recently. (1/n)

🧪 Whoa this @aaup.bsky.social guide for navigating NSF grant terminations looks amazing!! 👀 And quite timely: there's another EO deadline this Friday (3/28) to "terminate or modify...grants...to advance the policies of my administration." PDF: www.aaup.org/sites/defaul...

Come and work with us - recruitment of Assistant/Associate Professor with priority in Tort or Global health at Warwick Law School. Deadline is Monday. Happy to chat about how it is to work at Warwick; am not involved in the hiring committee. warwick-careers.tal.net/vx/lang-en-G...

This resource page highlights scholarship on authoritarianism, democratic back-sliding, democracy, and the US democratic crisis, as well as resources on academic freedom, advocacy, and teaching resources. There's a form for sharing additional resources as we intend for this to be a dynamic document

We invite you to submit presentations for Fall 2025. We welcome working papers by scholars at various career stages, using any method, in the fields of comparative politics and international relations. Please fill out the form below by May 15:

We also need to talk about the knock-on burdens these grant terminations are creating, for university administrators, students, and PIs, who have to find replacement funds, hop on crisis meetings, figure out how to file appeals, expedite paperwork and reimbursement requests, etc.

This is really really sad and also I don't know how anyone will be able to actually do this: share.inquirer.com/zxadUp [gift link]

Trans Lifeline is a good place to direct resources if you’re looking to help here fuck everyone involved with this decision

Almost every line of this story would have been simply unbelievable a few months ago: —Pioneering cancer researcher; —*Arrested* at airport in Boston; —Now indefinite ICE detention in Louisiana; —"Crime": not declaring some frog-embryo samples for research. Read it. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

Listening to my podcast backlog to avoid the news & this episode by @volts.wtf was super interesting - not least bc @casten.house.gov took an unusually international comparative view towards the end, so this European learnt new things about differences & parallels www.volts.wtf/p/the-view-f...

MIT is asking Alumni to SPEAK UP, giving them talking points and encouraging them to contact their legislature. This is huge. ORGANIZE! We can do this!! *Sorry - I deleted a prior post because it had an error in the caption

Vorgestern habe ich Konklave geschaut. Heute ist Papst Franziskus tot. Hat jemand Empfehlungen für AfD-Dokus?

Calling Boston-area contingent/NTT/whatever term you want to use faculty! I'm re-reading Mariame Kaba & reminded of how much relationships matter. Let's build some. (This event is organized by SEIU 509 but open to faculty across institutions, not just where we rep folks. Stay tuned 4 Zoom link.)

Every time Harry Potter makes a dollar, JK spends a quarter trying to kill a trans person

Looks like Nvidia's H20 chips used to serve AI models are to be export restricted to China after all. License required. Will licenses be forthcoming? www.wsj.com/livecoverage... Maybe a $1 million dinner in Florida doesn't get you much after all. www.npr.org/2025/04/09/n...

JKR funded the campaign group behind all this btw. This is why we beg you to stop engaging with Harry Potter media.

The student paper at the college at which I teach reports a "tsunami of takedown requests" from international students terrified of being targeted for innocuous, legitimate op-eds & opinions.. Many ask in person--leave no trace in writing. Reminds me of my father's account of studying in the USSR.

SORRY THESE ARE LATE I WAS BUSY IGNORING REALITY IN THE HOPE OF EXPERIENCING A BRIEF MOMENT OF HAPPINESS

I'm glad they did this and better late than never. But it would have been nice is this spine evolved when a racist mob came for the university's first Black woman president.

Harvard stands up Letter to the Harvard community from President Garber

Brilliant translation by @cindycarter.bsky.social of an extraordinary interview by former state media journalist Chai Jing. This is really something. Some excerpts: 🧵

As much as I love #wuxia stories with flowing robes and flying hair (earlier dynastic times), the republic era's a great setting for this genre too. I'm really enjoying wuxia mystery 天行健 Heroes, screen original #cdrama with the period's unique blend of revolutionaries, officials and Xia. 1/
