Let this be the start of a civil society cascade of just saying no to authoritarianism.

Dear Mexico, You are an amazing country, and we hope we were gracious guests. Thank you for letting us in amid all the craziness going on in our country. We had a wonderful time.

Complying in advance definitely helped Columbia!

JFC. WE ARE STILL WORSE OFF. We still have *at least* 10% global tariffs. Businesses can’t make decisions, as they don’t know what tariffs will be 90 days from now I usually say Trump is great at repackaging the status quo as victory but this is significantly worse than pre-Liberation Day status quo

How to (Self-)Destroy a Hegemon in 6 Easy Steps: 1. Wreck academia + science infrastructure 2. Erect massive tariff barriers + supercharge econ inequality 3. Re-segregate your (very) diverse military 4. Destroy elements of soft power (e.g., USAID) 5. Dismantle your democracy 6. Nuke immigration

After getting some rest, I am in awe of everyone who continues to lift their voice and speak out. This is a moment for our country, and we must make a choice about the America we want to be.

every college, corporate, and nonprofit president right now

with good reason, people complain about too much coverage of Ivies in the media. But at the very moment their inflated prestige could help all higher ed (the communities that depend on it!) across this country the most, Columbia’s leadership capitulated. Incredible cowardice, huge selfishness.

A betrayal of the people who give the university its life: faculty, students, staff. And for what.

I worked at USIP for eight years and was on the leadership team so if any journalists need background information or connections to others who are still there just let me know.

Have you given up? Or are you still ready to fight?

BREAKING—The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) office was just on lockdown for close to an hour while members of the DOGE team tried to enter the building, multiple people have told me. Security has now escorted out remaining staffers who’ve been told to telework until further notice.

Absolutely terrible. Lots of incredible scholars, practitioners, and partners at USIP.

Donald Trump isn’t trying to silence Mahmoud Khalil. He’s trying to silence you. open.substack.com/pub/ryandeno...

Apologies: I had a thread discussing the minerals agreement, but it was based on the old version, where Ukraine would hand over revenue to the US. The latest version does not have that provision, so I've deleted the thread.

"Americans should stand up and send their political leadership a clear message: We don’t support what you’re doing, so stop doing it in our name. We don’t want an alliance with Russia, and we don’t want a betrayal of Ukraine. And frankly, we are embarrassed." kyivindependent.com/editorial-a-...

Teachers teach. We need a leaderful movement, and there are leaders all around us.

@mcsweeneys.net, absolutely crushing it with this one: www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/fin... As I told someone on FB, your ignorance is not evidence of wrongdoing.

I keep seeing takes like this marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevo... 1. I don't like the status quo on policy X 2. Trump is thoughtlessly blowing things up, including on policy X 3. It might turn out better after being blown up so 🤷 We're on the road to authoritarianism, not your preferred policy.

I struggle to express just how *weird* Vance’s #MSC2025 speech was. This is a transatlantic security conference, happening while there is a war in Europe, and the US is announcing a partial withdrawal from European security. And the US VP speaks about (alleged) threats to free speech in Europe??

If you've ever used the Polity data, read this from Monty Marshall. tl;dr Polity is coding recent US events as an executive self-coup and an adverse regime change.
