First attempt at making a Haitian meal: djon djon rice with shrimp, griot and plantains.

US higher education had become a world-class sector, one of the greatest strengths of this country, even with the amount of work still to be done in making it more just and equitable. But a cabal of mediocre whites, out of pure spite and belligerent stupidity, have decided to choke it to death.

The fall of Fetterman has been disheartening, considering his political origins. I was skeptical of him when i first heard of some new jack coming into my hometown. I saw he genuinely opposed the deep corruption that had been there for decades, and thought he was a good dude after that. (1/x)

Speaking of expensive new hobbies, I've recently come to really enjoy tea. Ive tried many kinds, but, I recently learned about pu-er tea, and well...that stuff is pricey. I imagine the price is going to go through the roof with the tariffs.

I hate when I become interested in a new expensive hobby. Yet, 3D and DTF printing seem like a responsible expensive hobby. I need to do about 18 months of research before investing in it.

Happy Black History month !!

Shake is one of my favorite DJs of all time. He has inspired an entire generation of technofunk misfits and dancers for decades. Please check out this fundraiser. www.gofundme.com/f/anthony-sh...

A boycott is not just a flyer. It’s strategy. It’s coordination. It’s power. Boycotts don’t work in isolation. The Montgomery Bus Boycott wasn’t just about refusing to ride—it was carpools, mass meetings, & sustained organizing. I wrote about this here: www.ljoywilliams.com/blog/2025/1/...

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

Anytime I see little kids I just wanna apologize because they don't deserve to inherit this shitty ass planet.

one thing i’m stuck on is this idea that “masculine” energy means license to act like a chud in public, as opposed to more traditional notions of public masculinity, such as those that put a premium on the performance of integrity, honesty, honor and generosity.

I hear this take often, but I still continue collecting as I have for over 25 years. Digging for gems in the shop is about 90 percent of the pleasure of collecting.

In a world where nation states and non-state actors are constantly running influence operations for their own gain, going "Hey everybody, let's give China access to our sensitive information in mass" is not the one that a lot of people think that it is ...

Chapter 13 “On Tyranny” @timothysnyder.bsky.social discusses the need to get outside, from behind screens, meet publicly with people of diverse backgrounds, to compromise. Joining together, great changes can occur & messages sent to those in power. Poland & Solidarity. Mississippi & Freedom Riders

I'm without words.

Important guidance for le week-end from Roland Barthes:

Just finished a rewatch of Boardwalk Empire, probably one of my favorite HBO series. Since it ended Ive tried other shows set in the era, e.g. Peaky Blinders and Babylon Berlin. I just can't get into them. I just dont find British accents convincing as gangsters. Villains, yes. Gangsters, no.

Scenes from this morning. It's not nearly as bad as the storm we had in 2014. Still, as a rust belt ex-pat, seeing snow in Atlanta is a treat.

Literally more of y’all need to think about this as you increasingly outsource mundane work to gen AI

In the past, Ive said that mangos are the dopest fruit out there. Upon further consideration, I might have to retract that statement. I'm very close to giving that title to the plantain. I feel that the work I invest into its preparation yields more rewards than the mango. Also, fuck that pit.

Both of these photos could be put in an art exhibit called "Black people at work."

Happening in real time: this wonderful public resource is harassed, while Meta is using copywritten material to train up its AI. Power bloc is gonna power bloc, I guess.
