What’s that sound? Is that the sound of domestic nuclear weapons development gaining sudden traction in the halls of power in Seoul and Tokyo?

🧳 On the 6th anniversary of the Hanoi summit, where Trump said Kim "was not ready" and sent him home packing (for a 60-hour train ride), leaving a hot lunch on the dining room table... Trump and his national security officials agree to send Zelensky home because he "was not ready" to capitulate.

1/ Update: A key issue that has the potential to be a big variable in the timing of Yoon's impeachment ruling is the appointment of Ma Eun-hyeok as the 9th Constitutional Court justice.

ANNOUNCEMENT! I've started a new independent podcast called Korean Politics Debrief, where I will be discussing Korean politics, as the name suggests. I hope you join me on this new journey! open.spotify.com/show/0ggJUSg...

How much of the South Korean public back the impeachment of President Yoon? Some recent polls: 64% support impeaching Yoon - Gallup Korea (Jan 10) 62% support impeaching Yoon - NBS (Jan 9) 69% support impeaching Yoon - KBS (Jan 1) 69% support impeaching Yoon - MBC (Jan 1)

New piece for KoreaPro. I've done a couple reviews of Korean conservative newspapers positions' on Yoon's martial law declaration and fallout noting how they've been critical. But I noticed something interesting: conservative readers were not happy with the coverage 1/ koreapro.org/2025/01/sout...

The amount of twists and turns in this political saga is seriously head spinning.

Great beginner's guide to the head-spinning fallout from Yoon's martial law decree, and how he seems to testing the limits of Korea's democracy.

It's pretty incredible what comes out of Korea. youtu.be/Bdmm1O9iVXc?...

The PPP are in a catch-22 when it comes to LJM. They want to do everything in their power to stop him becoming president, because they believe he is a danger to the country. Yet, if he is gone, whoever comes next for the DP will surely beat the PPP more easily in the next election.

Full text of South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol's speech today. Online version: docs.google.com/document/d/1... #SouthKorea #MartialLaw #Impeachment cc @sarahjeong.bsky.social

On top of all Yoon’s craziness, minor opposition party leader Cho Kuk sentenced to 2 years in prison so he’s ineligible for presidential election m-en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN2024...

Yoon just gave a long speech justifying his declaration of martial law. Restated his claim that the opposition party is an anti-state force. Chinese spies. Drugs ruining the country. Pro-North Korea. Election commission hacked. It was like listening to far-right YouTube.

Why the impeachment process could drag out in South Korea

There's a regular guest on our show, who always calls the People Power Party as "The PP Party" and it always make giggle a little inside.

If Yoon is impeached and LJM becomes president, it will likely be a begrudging choice by the public with no other real alternative. If that is the case, then there will be no honeymoon period for Lee. He will be up against the wall from the start.

A major aspect we need to note about the failed impeachment vote is that the PPP and the President actually still hold all the cards. Impeachment cannot happen without the PPP's votes, and technically the President could just carry on if the PPP allows it.

Bets on whether Yoon will get impeached tomorrow? I really cannot tell at this point... Which is crazy, considering where we were Tuesday night.

This is really interesting so I’ll do a thread translating-summarizing it. 1/

Epic intro: “For someone who has spent nine years studying for the bar exam in addition to four years as an undergraduate law major, President Yoon Suk Yeol seemed to have no idea about the constitutional provision regarding martial law and the relevant legislation.”

Nobody protests like a Korean (sound up) 🤣🤣🤣

A great and sobering summary of recent events. m.koreatimes.co.kr/pages/articl...

My sporting analogy of last night: It’s like you’re losing in American football, but it's only the 3rd quarter, but you still decide to call a Hail Mary. Except you've only told the quarterback, and the team has no idea what’s happening. Oh and you don’t actually know how a Hail Mary actually works.

Impeachment would require at least 8 members from Pres. Yoon's own party to vote with the opposition. Then it has to go to the Constitutional Court. But 3 of 9 justices retired, and replacements haven't been confirmed. The current 6 justices are not enough. A min of 7 are required

South Korean media are trying to piece together the timeline of how Yoon decided to declare martial law. According to this article, Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun personally recommended martial law to Yoon on on December 3rd. n.news.naver.com/article/009/...

So here’s my morning after immediate analysis of why Yoon Suk Yeol’s self coup of December 3-4, 2024 failed. I’ll try to highlight 5 things, but they are not mutually exclusive. 1/

And the Korean won bounces back…

Yoon Suk Yeol has just given Lee Jae-myung the greatest Christmas gift he could have hoped for.

Shortest martial law ever.

This is absolutely not the news I would have dreamed of waking up to. South Korea's Yoon declares emergency martial law. to I have some scattered thoughts to follow. m-en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN2024...

When my Korean friends warned about martial law earlier this year, I have to say I was sceptical. I never believed Yoon and his wife would actually do it. Shocking events indeed and now worried for all my family and friends (and everyone else) in Korea
