#OTD in 1815, Napoléon escapes Elba on board of the Inconstant. He’ll land at Golfe-Juan on March 1st, eventually triggering the period known as the Hundred Days. It will lead to the Seventh Coalition, Waterloo and ultimately the exile on St-Helena. More: https://bit.ly/3WtIw19 #Napoleon #history

#OTD in 1916, beginning of the battle of Verdun. This horrific clash symbolizes the human catastrophe that was WWI. The French will eventually prevail, after both sides suffered over 700,000 casualties. Learn more about WWI in France at: https://buff.ly/3Z1rpGJ #history #war #WWI #Verdun

A pretty ridiculous coin to find in the middle of the woods in Maine by what used to be a road. This token was struck to commemorate the preliminaries of peace between Britain and France before the Treaty of Amiens in March 1802. Two months later, Napoleon reinstated slavery in the French colonies.

Yesterday, I have deleted the podcast’s X account. Although I’d stopped using it last Summer, I think anybody with a conscience should delete their X account. This podcast is apolitical, but even just having an account on what is effectively a fascist propaganda machine was intolerable anymore.

#OTD in 1788, foundation of the "Société des amis des Noirs" (Society of the Friends of the Blacks) the first French abolitionist society. Their moto was "Am I not your brother?". Many French thinkers and politicians will join it promptly, including La Fayette in 1789. #slavery #racism #history

New episode! Roald Amundsen: The Last Viking. The Norwegian explorer discovered a navigable Northwest Passage, was the first to reach the South Pole, and (maybe?😉) the first to reach the North Pole.⬇️ www.shipwrecksandseadogs.com/67 #skystorians #maritimehistory #norway #Amundsen #history

Important announcement 📢 My friends, after a period of reflection, I’ve decided to change the frequency of the podcast. Instead of releasing an episode every month, I will now release one every two months.

#OTD in 1763, signature of the Treaty of Paris following the Seven Years’War. France loses New France to Britain, but manages to keep its Caribbean possessions. Nevertheless, Britain emerges as the main world power at the time, but cracks already appear in North America…#history

#OTD in 1933, after years of bullying, lying manipulation and fighting, Adolf Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany. He’s chosen by the aging President von Hindenburg. Hitler is the perfect example of a man who worked the system to undermine it, destroy it, and then bring death to everyone. #nazism

#OTD in 1814, Napoléon defeats the Prussian army under Blücher at Brienne, where he had been a military student in 1779-84. It’s one of Napoléon’s last victories in what will eventually be a losing war. The Campaign of France is recognized as one of his greatest, despite his ultimate defeat.

For 2025, I've planned the first part of the year with these topics: The French Résistance during WWII (to be released this month), Antoine Lavoisier, the Revolution of 1830 and then Napoléon III. If all goes well, they will succeed each other at the rhythm of one episode a month. Cheers!

#OTD in 1894 Alfred Dreyfus is condemned for treason to: "the removal of his rank, military degradation, and perpetual deportation to a fortified enclosure." After his planned public humiliation, he's to be sent to the "bagne" in Guyana, one of the worst places to be incarcerated in. #antisemitism

#OTD in 1916, end of the battle of Verdun. Considered one of the most brutal battles in history, the purpose of the German offensive was to “bleed the French army white”. The French held and prevailed. Over its 10 month duration, it claimed 700,000 casualties. #WWI More at: https://bit.ly/4iIy5kU

My friends @mcribbhistory.bsky.social and @zwhitehistory.bsky.social, somebody asked me the question in the picture below on Threads. Could you enlighten us? I’m no expert on Nelson. We were talking about the end of the siege of Toulon in 1793.

#OTD in 1793, end of the siege of Toulon occupied by the British forces. First taken by French royalist forces, it was the handed to the British to harm the new French Republic. To solve this situation, the French government sent a promising young captain: Napoléon Bonaparte. #history

Enjoy the second part of our bonus episode on the Raft of the Medusa, the story behind the painting by Géricault, told by Rich Napolitano from the fantastic @shipwreckspod.bsky.social. Enjoy! #podcast #naval #history https://buff.ly/4gCNl0R

Should AI be used in the creation of podcasts, here's my answer: no. To prove my point, I asked ChatGPT what it knew about my podcast and got the answer in the attached image. It's completely off. How can it help if it misunderstands the podcast itself? Ludicrous. Write your own stuff folks! #AI

In case you missed it. We released an episode earlier this week! Learn all about the famed French pianists Robert and Gaby Casadesus. #podcast #history #Frhistory
