I am talking about other simmers and custom content BTW, not anything official! Sorry to worry anyone (... prematurely?)

Just CC! Though I'm always a little worried about the future of EA and TS4 lol but in this case it was a default replacement for some in-game paintings that kind of left me scratching my head
comment in response to post
The Sims and its community always just felt like an accessible platform to foster creativity & self-expression, no matter your experience level, so to go out of your way to replace in-game images with soulless forgettable half-stolen garbo is. Huh. Oh okay

KEEP DOING IT!!!!!!!!

HASDMGH yes this is basically what it boils down to!!! Like MY FEELINGS ARE GONNA BE HURT NO MATTER WHAT SO LET'S JUST ROLL WITH IT! I'LL GET OVER IT!!! I'd rather have my feelings hurt in the short-term and improve for it than stagnate for longer! But I also understand it's a big ask for many 😔
comment in response to post
Yes! I feel sometimes like the social script we've collectively agreed on when it comes to constructive criticism is kind of hamstringing both sides. There's this pressure to find the most sugar-coated way to say something then a pressure to respond all happy-happy. I wish both could be released 👏
comment in response to post
The flipside of this would be that the people offering concrit would not have to wrap it in seven layers of bubble wrap and sugarcoating. You don't have to spare my feelings, I don't have to pretend like my feelings were spared. We can both move on with our days!!

Yeah, I feel like it's just a general difference in attitude. I'm not afraid to disagree with my friends etc while to other people, any form of that is conflict and therefore inherently bad & fractious. So any sort of discussion around crit = disagreement = a fight = RUN! But to me, that's business!
comment in response to post
Agreed! I know I'm asking a lot when I ask for concrit bc it's inherently difficult to navigate socially for the first time lol. Even if I had a heart of steel about it, people are still scared to say anything. I think I gotta basically say "I will not respond to the crit til X hours later" haha

CRYING LAUGHING BECAUSE YEAH LMAO. I WANT FRIENDS LIKE THIS EDITOR!! I'd never actually say anything like that but the Energy... I wish I could just. be allowed to not be all sunshine and roses after concrit lol. Like let me sit in the corner with my lil raincloud while I process!!

Ahh it's a hard boundary to cross...! Art is so personal and it can be difficult to get people to be honest with you when they know you'll be kinda upset, which is frustrating when it's what you want LOL. Hopefully we'll both get there 🤝
comment in response to post
If I have a specific piece I want feedback on in the future I'll keep you in mind! But if you have general concrit to give (like broader issues you've noticed recurring) you can drop me a line too 👍
comment in response to post
Like this is the issue 😭 I don't want people to be nervous about giving me concrit because they don't want to "make me sad". I want people to understand that I'm not really sad it's just gonna be a part of how I process criticism and I wish I didn't have to hide any sign of negative emotion!! yknow
comment in response to post
HAHA I do know, sometimes people who are into "harsh realities" are more into the harshness than the reality lmao But I think it's the same problem, bc I WANT people who are okay with hurting my feelings (temporarily) bc they know I'm asking for it!! That's why I wish I could be transparent abt it!
comment in response to post
god's strongest warriors & greatest artists are the ones who can take constructive criticism on the chin no worries. but I also know that's never gonna be me lol so let's settle for second-best, where I can grab my chin and cry like a baby about it and you just keep eating your sandwich til I'm done
comment in response to post
basically instead of saying "you can be honest! I promise it won't hurt my feelings!!" I wish it was more acceptable/understood to just say "oh it's gonna hurt my feelings like CRAZYYY but that's not your problem. I'm asking for it so don't take my resulting stroppiness personally. please be honest"
comment in response to post
let me ask you for concrit and then whinge like WELL WHAT DO U MEAN BY THAT. WELL I THINK IT'S MORE LIKE THIS. WELL I WAS TRYING FOR- and you can just smile and nod and then later I can come back smoking a metaphorical cigarette like Son of a bitch. You're right
comment in response to post
it's like when someone asks you to wake them up after a nap and you know they're gonna be whiny about it because nobody likes being woken up. like that's nothing personal and you don't take it to heart, you just wait for them to come by later and say thanks/sorry I wish it could be like that!!

with careful planning, you, too, can end up in a situation where you're creating a comic that is 80~% Shit That Rules to Draw
comment in response to post
Obviously this advice isn't always applicable. Sometimes the appeal of your comic hinges on being very grounded and/or requiring a lot of visuals that just aren't very fun to draw. I can relate as someone who's planning a comic about a weird cupboard. But at least ask yourself if it must be so!!

Not a huge Death Note fan but as I understand it they literally invented L because they knew the story was otherwise extremely dry visually-speaking so they wanted to invent some bizarre little gremlin who would be interesting to look at amidst all the talking heads. And it worked didn't it

If you're tired of drawing the same boring suburban architecture then set it in some fantasy world where even a chair is fun to draw (the One Piece rule of thumb). If you're tired of drawing repeated mundane actions, make your characters behave outlandishly. add in a little freak a la L Death Note

THIS IS SOOOO CUTE

I end up kinda stuck in a rut when it comes to feedback because I rarely have specific pieces I want feedback on or know what to ask for haha, which is awkward for everyone involved. But I'm trying to make more of an effort! I don't do master studies very often tbh, so that's a good idea. Thank you!
comment in response to post
Yeah, taking a step back is usually what I do, because trying to force it and then getting frustrated isn't going to help anything haha. But I was wondering if other people had success like... forcing a perspective shift, I dunno! But oohh redrawing old art is always fun...!
comment in response to post
Yeah, I'll often flip to doing studies when I'm feeling like this, but it's not the mood I'm in today haha... maybe I just gotta find the right ref though! I should honestly incorporate more quick-turnover studies as a routine warmup...

I know it's frustrating to be a beginner at art but I mean it when I say a clean slate is a blessing!! I genuinely think the upper limits of an artist who starts out later in life is higher than someone who has been self-taught since childhood because there's fewer bad habits to unlearn

I get stuck in so many ruts mentally and it's frustrating. Even when I try and approach things completely differently I feel like I end up in the same place as where I started. I can sort-of identify issues but I can't identify how to fix them because I'm too deep in my own art

HAHA I'm glad!! If a reference picture clicks with you in any small way YOU GOTTA HOLD ONTO IT BECAUSE IT'S A PIECE OF A BIGGER PUZZLE I SWEAR...!!!
comment in response to post
And once you have a small collection of these references that stood out to you - maybe the lighting made the 3D form more obvious, maybe the angle was particularly illuminating - you'll be tabbing through them and get an "AHA!" moment where the subject just *clicks*. So save them!! Please!!
