I love Mario kart! I always make my kids play on the same team otherwise one ends up crying or storming off. And they're still young enough that I don't want to be too good, so I will purposely pick a difficult to drive character/cart so it's still fun and challenging for me. #kidlitart

Doritos are my go-to if I'm craving a salty, crunchy stress reliever.

My kids eat PB&N sandwiches. I will eat Nutella by the spoonful...and then will have to get another clean spoon for another scoop. #kidlitart

I pretend it's a nut butter that's healthy and then slather it on fruit like bananas or strawberries to pretend it's even more healthy. #kidlitart

Walks are really nice. The hard part for me is to remember that walks are nice. #kidlitart

Alt4: 2020 gave me anxiety I had never had before. I took a step back from some big work things. I returned very gradually. I think the small steps of returning gradually made it possible even though it felt impossible. Step 1--show up. Step 2--do one small thing. #kidlitart

Alt 2: I love the supportive community of 12x12, especially for writing. There aren't a ton of illustrators active in the forums, but the few that are have been really encouraging and have helped a lot with me being at the beginning-ish of my illustration journey. #kidlitart

Q2 I just vented to my (online) book club friends today about rejections and a couple of quick messages from them of solidarity and encouragement were just what I needed to keep my head up. #kidlitart

Ooh! Secret book good news! And yay for AABB!

Hello, #kidlitart!!! This month I polished a board book dummy and am getting ready to send it to my agent.

That warms my heart so much! You just made my day.

And here is another piece. This is a portrait of a service dog through the eyes of its owner. Inspired by the accusations that Degas painted blurry pictures because he was losing his vision.

Have you joined their mailing list for freebies? Have you attended a free book chat? Checked out the website? Lots of ways to test out the content before you join.

I love that 12x12 feels like a family. Supportive community run by people who actually care. Julie Hedlund and her team are amazing! And so much value! Webinars, private forum for critiques, expert help, places to ask questions. I highly recommend!

You did great modding, Victoria! (and Charlene of course!) #kidlitart

Ha! Yes, I understood. Maybe one day I'll have the confidence to pitch my illustration talent!

I want to do this too! I got a train ornament this past year to remind me of the steam engine ride we took on summer vacation. Ornament memories are my favorite! #kidlitart

I'm horrible at celebrating myself. But when I got my 100th agent rejection (years ago), I bought myself a motivational necklace that reads "Don't Give Up" and I still wear it to this day. When I finally sell a manuscript, I think I'll buy a new one--a nice engraved book locket. #kidlitart

Alt 4: I like things that auto-track progress like a Goodreads reading challenge, or Scrivener word count. I also like how 12x12 has a monthly badge for progress you've made in certain areas. #kidlitart

I'm not at the postcard part of my journey yet, but I try to make at least one post a month for my #diversifymyart challenge. I typically share it on IG and here which helps validate the effort. #kidlitart

I started my journey toward illustration a few years ago because someone said "why wait?" when I spoke of "someday". I'm so glad I listened to them! I like your idea of starting on the first day of the week if you need a starting block. You can use any days before to count down and prep. #kidlitart

I think like this sometimes too. I might adjust the timeline, but keep reaching for the "impossible" goal. #kidlitart

Random aside, #kidlitart: I once heard the advice to not wait until new year (or insert future date here) to make a change. Start that diet now. Break that bad habit now. Etc. I've made a lot of positive changes in my life with this advice. Would never work if I wait. ADHD--I'd forget.

No and yes. I don't like stressing about future me, but goals help future me do better. #kidlitart

Alt: My sub-ready board book dummy never went on sub last year, and I'd love to get it out soon. #kidlitart

Goal: make at least one piece of art per month. Surprisingly difficult for me. I'm just busy. #kidlitart

I loved all of these NIVs!

The large cast was hard for me to read, so it was a DNF for me (for now). I think I need to read it over the summer when I have fewer distractions.
comment in response to post
You might try an audio book version. Sometimes the line breaks of certain NIVs are too much for me when reading on the page.

I guess oink rhymes with other onomatopoeia type words like ploink, but it was a fun word to end the poem on.

When I was first starting out, I found Kidlit411 extremely helpful. They have a website with tons of info. They have a Facebook group for discussing craft, etc. And they have a separate Facebook group for finding critique swaps. Found some great critique partners there! All free! #kidlitchat

If you're a picture book writer, @12x12challenge.bsky.social is worth every penny. So many resources and opportunities to work on craft, but also an amazing community of like-minded people! #kidlitchat
