I have begged founders to tell me who they're actually optimizing for, because if it's for the VCs or for short term over long term revenue or for an acquisition, I will design something different. Sometimes the survival of a small company requires that. I need to know the real customer.

It also occasionally just doesn't work if the real reason they're doing something is "the VCs/CEO told me to do this other thing" or if they are fundamentally irrational about their own vision. Incredibly frustrating since they'll often lie about those things!
