They're going to try it, aren't they: universities without academics.

I expected this weekend to be the bank holiday weekend and I'm livid that it isn't

To this doleful list we must now add Derby and Lincoln, so that's ten universities making redundancies. In a week. Ridiculous and pitiful.

Just no words anymore. What the ffffff.

Adi says that if I'm going to get along with software developers and engineers I need to watch more anime

University management teams when consultancy firms give them the same advice they've given everyone else:

Incredulous, honestly, at the number of Sensible Centrists who are trying to justify the Met forcing their way into a religious space to arrest people who had not actually committed a crime at the time of arrest

This is so good and clear-sighted. A breath of fresh air in a time of baffling support for unhelpful, harmful uses of tech! "A.I.’s most revolutionary potential is helping experts apply their expertise better and faster. But for that to work, there has to be experts."

Mother in law mostly communicates with me in stickers. Here she is supporting my career choices 😅

When institutions support the use of chat gpt as a study 'tool' do they understand the nightmarish position they put teachers and students in? Do they care?

Entirely correct move. More of this please and stay available to journalists to describe just how *bad* the whole process of arrival at this judgement was. Don't let it settle as accepted narrative.

Gonna just say this from now on.

Just wanted y'all to know Yolanda Saldivar had her parole denied. RIP Selena.

This pic always gave me chills in a good way 😁

I can now kind of write and test a higher order function, kind of. It's early days.

I want us to study the history of resistance to slave catchers right now. I want us to study how slave catchers worked, how they were sanctioned, who paid them, and why they did what they did, right now. I want us to study the hyperlocal and networked ways slave catchers were impeded. Right now.

Finished today's data engineering bootcamp things on a high note. I'm basking in how far I've come in the last week and 2 days, but also in the last year!

People are rightly mocking the White House for accidentally inviting a journalist to a group chat about bombing Yemen but it feels like we should also probably be talking about how they're bombing Yemen.

In the words of Oprah: You get Magnolia! 👉 You get Magnolia!👇 You get Magnolia!👈 You get Magnolia!👆 Happy Monday everyone. 🥰

I'll always be grateful for this reality check! And furious that it was necessary.

Millennials have this too.

Extremely jealous of everybody who doesn't have a trapped nerve right now.

We are disappointed but not surprised that Meta has used millions of pirated books to develop its AI systems. As a matter of urgency, Meta needs to compensate the rightsholders of all the works it has been exploiting. But what can authors do? Read here: societyofauthors.org/2025/03/21/t...

Okay, this is my newest very very favorite meme.

In the game Disco Elysium apparently you can die from sitting in an uncomfortable chair for too long and at the age I'm at now, that feels realistic

I hope more UCU branches at institutions threatened with cuts are asking for arrangements like this. They can't all say no surely.

"The oppressive environment at the top of Dundee University prevented alarm bells from being raised. It shut down any questioning about the performance of the university and the evident financial problems" Take note, senior managers! www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/politics/...

🍿 this is gonna be great.

Horrifying news from Gaza (AJ puts death toll at 340). Netanyahu's decision to resume mass air strikes buries both hopes for the safe return of the remaining hostages and for an end to the suffering of civilians in Gaza. It clearly shows that Netanyahu never truly intended to honour the ceasefire.

Ok so I've changed my computer's operating system, learned basic Python, the command-line interface, logic and control flow, set up on github, will have to hope that's enough for now!

This! I was saying for years: it gets so much harder to do any meaningful work when your actual discipline is eroded. Closing your eyes and ears and telling sunny stories of success and collaboration like nothing us wrong does not help!

This is such a vital piece by @davehitchcock.bsky.social on the university funding crisis, which has been a decade in the making. www.historyworkshop.org.uk/education/a-...

sobLOL. Yesterday was “University Mental Health Day”. Perfect day to throw colleagues into uncertainty about their livelihoods and careers without a plan.

THE NUMBERS. A quarter of this would be disastrous and sad...this is unspeakable

That's literally everyone I know who works at Cardiff: all good people, excellent teachers and researchers, friends, colleagues, people whose work has informed my own. And for Welsh as a discipline, that's a substantial proportion of the scholarly community on the planet. Absolutely catastrophic.

Seriously. We should all be shouting this from the rooftops.

My head is spinning at these numbers - howww, logistically, practically??

A fun thread here about reading Persuasion For the First Time. Reflecting on my own relationship with Austen, I find that each rereading of any of Austen's books astonishes me with something fresh. They are never the same books twice, perhaps because I change.

Many things are awful so here's Alvin, who is beautiful

Let’s face it. Getting rid of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is to make way for less qualified white men to take positions they don’t deserve.
