No it is not the job of Border Patrol to break up public protests.

HAPPENING NOW: Aerial coverage of protesters marching peacefully in LA to protest ongoing ICE raid operations and Trump’s federalization of the National Guard Reporter: “What we’re looking at right now is a quiet, organized group and demonstrators marching peacefully to their destination.”

That grant of almost total immunity to the president could be doing some big work soon.

People should be able to testify about unconstitutional state action without having to worry that their testimony will provoke more unconstitutional state action. theintercept.com/2025/06/07/i...

The scary thing in US politics right now is that there's a contingent of people who have given themselves permission to indulge in their inner emotional desire for cathartic violence against groups they dislike. They cannot be dissuaded from this because the permission structure is a closed loop

it's really funny that any news anchor in america can say that biden was mentally incompetent but you can't say trump is mean without getting in big trouble

"The U.S. has redirected 20,000 missiles equipped with the APKWS laser guidance system — initially intended for Ukraine — to U.S. Air Force units in the Middle East. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy confirmed the decision in an interview with ABC News." @militarnyi.com militarnyi.com/en/news/u-s-...

Tribal colleges are important for reasons reported here: providing "higher education rooted in [Native] language, culture and community.” And they provide opportunities for rural people, Native and non-Native alike, in nursing, early childhood development, counseling, trades, etc.

Seeing lots of discussion about whether the U.S. military will go along or push back against orders to confront mass protests. Here’s my take on what other cases and prior research tell us about what might happen. 1/

In a just world this guy would already be fired and facing charges for creating a grotesquely unfit process guaranteed to create irreparable harm and unrecoverable costs for taxpayers Nobody ethical would have taken this assignment in the first place

Earlier this evening, the Univision crew grabbed their gear and started running when federal police began shooting pepper balls at us. @lataco.bsky.social

Tear-gassing an unarmed, unmasked woman holding a US flag

God bless and keep safe this woman.

Remember this iconic photo from Ferguson? This is Edward Crawford, throwing back a tear gas canister to protect some nearby kids. Like many identified Ferguson protesters and organizers, he was "found dead" a couple years later and neither the cops nor the media will ever investigate.

It's worth recalling, at this moment, how Trump spoke admiringly of China's Tiananmen Square crackdown. www.independent.co.uk/news/world/a...

Incredible to me that people can’t make the ver my simple connection: Trump president = domestic unrest

I believe, unequivocally, that what the White House is doing is illegal, immoral, and a betrayal of the most basic principles of democracy. I believe if they continue on their current path they will shatter the republic. I don’t know what or how else to say it.

ICE is going to elementary school graduation ceremonies to abduct people. You don't get lower than that. It not only destroys the day for the families in question, it destroys the experience for all the other people and terrorizes the children.

There is no bigger story right now than the White House asserting that California residents are in a state "of rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States."

BBC is the only one covering the Los Angeles protests right now as Fox, CNN and MSNBC ignore it.

Good question, but I think we all know the answer.

Reminder that this country had an insurrection on Jan 6 and Trump refused to send in the National Guard.

10 USC 12406 has a textual limitation that is different from the Insurrection Act (and a bit ambiguous). "Orders . . .shall be issued *through the governors* of the States." Upshot: CA Governor Newsom can shape the NG response, rules for use of force, etc. www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/...

My hunch is that, as we saw with Lafayette Park, National Guard troops are not going to be as compliant as this administration thinks. It’s one thing to unleash cops consumed by warrior cop culture on neighborhoods. Quite another to send reservists who are also accountants, barbers, and teachers.

You know what I see? I see a community reacting to gangs of armed masked men who look like nativist vigilantes, not legitimate, accountable law enforcement.

Every person on Bluesky should know: * Every post on Bluesky is PUBLIC forever * Every post on Bluesky is archived by ICE, NSA, and many other agencies * Even if you delete a post, it’s already been captured * Judges don’t care if you were “kidding” or being ironic www.404media.co/the-200-site...

don't really think they've gamed out what happens when a majority of the population ends up having stories like this

They just can't wait to call out military troops to suppress political dissent. They've been chomping at the bit to do this since they lost in 2020.

the white house thinks brute force is, no pun intended, a trump card. they don’t anticipate pushback and they don’t know how to handle it with anything other than escalation. the issue is that each escalation is itself a gamble. if protesters refuse to back down, you’ve lost face. (1/?)

Not even 5 months into the Trump Administration and we're already at the "will the military refuse to obey clearly unlawful orders?" stage of authoritarianism.

Exactly this. Go to TikTok. Look at the lives. It’s 400 people OUTSIDE LA, standing outside an ICE facility and they are making the ruling class shake. This is a sign of weakness on the part of the ruler: they are afraid and they can be stopped.

Sending 2,000 troops to Los Angeles is the same thing as sending a few dozen random people to a gulag in El Salvador, they're doing this because it's a thing they've always wanted to do, not because of any broader goal or coherent plan. Subordination of strategy to tactical planning.

BREAKING: please, everyone, turn on local news. there is NOTHING going on in LA. Its over, the protest broke up hours ago. Local news helicopters are trolling for trouble and there's none. Just some LAPD/LASD road blocks. If they 'send the Guard' now, its just because they really really want to.

Today: Tanks are being moved en masse into DC. Trump is deploying a state national guard over a governor’s objection to police protests. Trump threatened a major donor with “severe consequences” if they support his political opponents. If you’re still wondering what time it is, read this again

1/ If accurate, this is almost certainly a conflict with the Posse Comitatus Act, which prohibits the use of the military for domestic law enforcement, including the National Guard if they are federalized.

Absolutely wild that LA has deployed LAPD, DHS has deployed both ICE and CBP, now the white house is calling in the national guard. You'd think the wildest riot in history was going down in LA right now, but it's actually just a bunch of protestors mostly just standing around holding signs.

I'm one of the leaders of the event in Worcester, and I'm speaking about how ICE actions may be the tip of the sword the administration will use to declare martial law and shut down elections

Kristi Noem in Feb 2024: If Biden federalizes the National Guard [to handle border issues], we’ve got a war on our hands.”l Kristi Noem in 2025 as DHS Secretary: …federalizing the National Guard.

Although the Houston ICE arrestee is described in the story as part of the Afghan army, his attorney identifies him as a veteran of the Kandahar Strike Force—aka the QSF or NDS-03, the CIA’s Afghan surrogate force in Kandahar. Here’s a 2021 story of mine about NDS-03’s very difficult escape:

This is the cycle: raid, escalate, criminalize the response, send in troops. ICE raids are not neutral, they’re psychological warfare on communities, and now they’re using military backup. This isn’t enforcement. It’s state-sponsored intimidation.

There were a few hundred people protesting the ICE actions in California today. Most probably lived in the neighborhood that had been raided by armed, uniformed men who looked like soldiers and not police. The idea that the response to this 2,000 National Guard is fucking insane.

Trump finally chiming it. Sounds like he's issuing an ultimatum to Gavin and Bass to either send in the Guard and LAPD or he'll federalize the Guard and send them in himself. We are rapidly approaching a crisis point.
