Have you seen any of Yuri Norstein’s “The Overcoat”? Cutout animation, been in progress for 25+ years and I doubt he’ll ever finish it, but the extant footage is unlike anything else I’ve ever seen…. youtu.be/bg7MF9DkDNo?...

“It’s okay though. Folks will remember my brilliant, epic oration, and not that ‘foursqaure and seven years’ garbage.”

Nat Geo always has a “The real Jesus” story on its cover

Come to think of it, you posting a live version of "Sail Away" on LGF years ago is what first turned me on to him. Many thanks to you!

The man (almost) never misses. "The World Isn't Fair", "Rednecks", etc, and "Political Science" feels like it could be a record of Trump's own mush-brain thoughts. And then the ballads... "Texas Girl", "Marie", "In Germany Before the War". Just the best there is.

In a similar vein, I’d flag Randy Newman’s “Rednecks”—also starts out as a kind of slash-and-burn on the South but then turns its glare on the related hypocrisies of the north. Some may have (understandable) trouble getting past frequent use of a certain word but his satiric target is clear

Whatever the merits of his books, King seems like a decent, intelligent dude who genuinely appreciates the craft of writing and does a lot to promote and elevate other writers. Never heard him speak on AI but seems like something he’d oppose. Unlike Patterson. (And lol at the joke)

Finally got to see the academy museum in LA (overall meh, almost no history, though surprisingly had some experimental animation— Pitt, McLaren, Fischinger—on display) But there was a solid color (temp) exhibit. Showed lots of old tech, inc the machine used for cutting stencils. Always wondered how…

Any truth to the stories that he got his start animating bugs because he was supposed to document behavior for a museum, and live bugs wouldn’t move under the hot lights? I assume stories that people thought he actually trained bugs to act in this film are nonsense…

Me too. Stunningly beautiful. And The Red Turtle gets insufficient love.

What is your source for this story? (Not doubting you, I’m curious to read more)
comment in response to post
Except WB didn’t release the movie even!! They were going to bury it and eventually decided to let a small outfit called “ketchup entertainment” release it. The film isn’t half bad, either.

Love it. Billy Gilbert is definitely Gimli.

I’ve seen this photo captioned as Ollie being inoculated against typhus. Be like Ollie!* *ok, maybe not the mustache.

Very curious about this. I also recently read about “the city with no Jews” and was curious to track down a copy of that one. Have you seen it (I dont think you’ve reviewed it on your site)?

In my intro animation class last week I showed a clip from this film, prefaced by asking students (most of whom are not animation majors) what the first animated feature was, expecting them to say Snow White… and for the first time in years no one gave the wrong answer!

Also his boss berated American Jews for not being “loyal” to Israel. Not that consistency has ever been important for them.

I recently watched “Late Spring”, another wonderful, insightful Ozu film.

As a kid there was a store in the mall with just a few videos behind glass—and I’d ask to rent King Kong (which set my professional course!) Back when you had a choice of Beta or VHS…Later, when our suburb was only BB, I’d drive into the city for the store with rare, foreign, silents, etc. Memories…

Looking at this photo and photos of Emil Bove, I have to say— when Trump said he wanted his own Roy Cohn, I didn’t think he was prioritizing physical appearance.

I was lucky enough to live in LA when the Silent Movie Theater reopened in the late 90s, early 00s. For a while they played movies most nights— Cheney fests, Clara Bow months, everything! Sometimes with a 90ish yr old organist (who was great!) Then it was one silent a month. Then 4 a year… Then 😔

Thanks for this— helped me find your review of Stan and Ollie. I had been curious what you thought of it. For me, the moment that sealed the deal was when Stan climbed into bed with Ollie. It was so perfectly in tune with what made them special and lovely.

I love this. I come from a family of musicians, obviously their instruments are hugely important. When my grandmother died we gave her piano to a friend who had been one of her students. As you say, an instrument should be played, not just a piece of furniture. Kol hakavod*. (*All honor/well done)

I read the army corps of engineers turned on the pumps (not sure which ones exactly) in SoCal after they had been offline three days for maintenance. That explanation could logically get twisted into what he says here I guess. Or he could think he is responsible for the fact it’s now raining.
