How tf do they plan to teach “a clear examination of how the United States has admirably grown closer to its noble principles throughout its history” while also canceling MLK and Holocaust Remembrance Day? By claiming that Trump glorification is our “noble principle” wtf
It's easy if you only teach the things you like. I don't see anything in here telling schools that they should be teaching comprehensive or complete history; only history clearly favorable to the white, Republican myth of the US.
Teach the ennobling principles of rule of law and rejection of executive power. Teach the uplifting stories of killing Confederate traitors and fascist collaborators.Teach the accurate and honest history of the foundation of this country by a small group of landowning slavers and accommodationists.
"I am one of those who think the best friend of a nation is he who most faithfully rebukes her for her sins—and he her worst enemy, who, under the specious and popular garb of patriotism, seeks to excuse, palliate, and defend them" - Frederick Douglas
What’s happening now that’s so terrifying is that no matter how incompetent and incoherent the felon is they just won’t acknowledge it. They haven’t heard about it yet. It’s so scary.

(d) “Patriotic education” means a presentation of the history of America grounded in:
(i) an accurate, honest, unifying, inspiring, and ennobling characterization of America’s founding and foundational principles;
(ii) a clear examination of how the United States has admirably grown closer to its noble principles throughout its history;
(iii) the concept that commitment to America’s aspirations is beneficial and justified; and
Nothing has brought the country closer to its noble values than those mass-produced confederate statues getting pulled down and pissed on. And people realizing that Columbus was a shithead who should be scorned.
It sure is, and we all have to ask ourselves how the hell we took our eye off the ball, collectively, and failed to prepare the masses to articulate and defend classical liberal democracy.
I can swear I read this in Russian from Russian Federation's Ministry of Education general-education (below university) curriculum. What is this a screenshot of?
I’m confused because “an accurate, honest, unifying, inspiring, and ennobling characterization of America's founding and foundational principles” and all that requires teaching about diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, which an earlier EO forbade, as this one does for trans kids.
v2 will read something like, "a clear examination of how the United States has admirably grown closer to its noble principles throughout its history, bringing us the Golden Age of America™ under our benevolent Lord and Savior, His Royal Highness Emporor Donald J. Trump, to whom all knees must bend!"
"By 'nationalism'... I mean the habit of identifying oneself with a single nation or other unit, placing it beyond good and evil and recognizing no other duty than that of advancing its interests. Nationalism is not to be confused with patriotism."
It is this kind of stuff that makes me glad us Brits lost the War of Independence. We know what to do with our history - steal it from other people and stuff it in a museum.
Truly, if I had learned more of the darker elements of American history in high school, I would not have fallen down the rabbit hole of leftist reading and media the last few years. That these things aren't discussed makes learning about them feel like discovering Secret Knowledge.
I think you could fulfil those criteria from a left wing perspective. Abolish slavery, Progressive Era, New Deal, fight fascism, Civil Rights. Use Lincoln's interpretation of America's founding:
"A new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."
The ending's a bit of a mess, but everything leading up to it is good! One of the rare adaptations where I love the book AND the streaming series even though they're very different stories.
Foundational principles like having a government without a king and three branches of government keeping each other in check. Yes, we are truly moving closer to that aspirational place.
Banning learning from one's mistakes. Not terribly helpful.
I hadn't heard of US internment camps until an AP History class in HS in the 1980s (and that was because a classmate brought it up and was reprimanded for it). Juneteenth was new to me in my 40s. I went to a highly rated public school.
Teachers are hired to deliver curriculum; inasmuch as that curriculum deviated from their closely-held beliefs, they've both contacted away any 1A arguments and the curriculum-determining body is almost certain to meet scrutiny due to their need to provide uniform curriculum.
The part that sticks out to me is 3(c), especially (iii)[which I read in light of the previous EO that addressed transgenderism). This enforcement measure doesn't seem like it only applies if the curriculum is changed, in fact it reads to me like an effort to force the change
My wife is in HR for a district(and the superintendent is a friend), I'm pondering how this also puts them in a legally difficult position if they enforce their policies
They would have standing to sue the school if the school enforced it in breach or contract but assuming the law held, defense of public policy would be strong for the school
But how does the EO hold when it’s actual contract/policy/law vs pretend? At that point I don’t think the courts need to even pretend they’re applying any real analysis
"Orwall... Orwell. I call him Orwall, but many call him Orwell. Orwell, or Orwall, is an example of somebody who's done an amazing job and is being recognized more and more, I notice"
There are lots of people on X who love to quote Orwell to support, in a twisted way, their own arguments. The really funny thing is that they would be appalled to know that he was a committed socialist.
This policy (patriotic education) literally can be found in Mein Kampf. I used to anonymize those passages and hand them out to my students for rhetorical analysis exercises, alongside similarly anonymized excerpts from Jesse Jackson, Ghandi, and Thoreau.
The saddest thing is, that was basically the curriculum in a nutshell, with the exception of one teacher in high school on grumpy days.
And I'm a millennial who grew up in a liberal town in MA.
I had a Trump supporter say that to me when I spoke very explicitly about a policy change that negatively impacts the US that I'm uniquely qualified to speak about.
And we're still doing soooooo good!
We totally didn't feel the need to re-invent slavery as the Prison Industrial Complex, where the Land of the Free has 4% of the world's population, but 20% of its incarcerated who we routinely exploit for cheap labor! https://bsky.app/profile/mrcontrariwise.bsky.social/post/3lgfjwmc5u22e
Approved documentaries within a patriotic education:
Rambo
Rambo First Blood
Predator
Predator 2
Alien v. Predator
Alien: Resurrection
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
Braveheart
Soul Man
Juwanna Mann
White Chicks
Selling First Blood a bit short, I think. The cops and small town America's small-mindedness are the villains. Rambo just wants to be left alone. Rambo: First Blood, Part II is the steaming libel of POW camps and "we coulda won if 'they'd' let the brave soldiers fight 'fair.'"
Not Rambo 1, it's about a Vietnam vet being mistreated by the state and then righteously killing them for abusing him. That would give people the wrong idea for sure.
First Blood is hardly inspiring and shows the horrors of war and a man suffering with PTSD, treated terribly by small town local law enforcement. The rest of the movies are trash, but the first movie is great in that it demonstrates the psychic damage we inflict on our servicepeople
Yeah, but it’s Mel Gibson. In addition to his history of antisemitism and racism, now he’s started calling Trump “daddy” and telling everyone how much he wants Trump to spank him. His movies get a pass until Stephen Miller finds something better to masturbate to.
But you can’t use the Patriot because of the scenes of the white soldier repenting his discrimination against the black slave soldier fighting for freedom. So Braveheart is the necessary stand-in.
Pretty funny coming from the guy who shits on the constitution in new ways every day. Really hilarious from the guy whose bought Supreme Court gave him the power of a king.
Did I cross over into a different timeline? In my time line the United States was founded by a bunch of rich white guys who didn't like to pay taxes, and most owned slaves.
In a follow-up EO, the Department of Education will be spared, but repurposed:
Combined with the National Park Service, it will become the Department of Parks and Reeducation, charged with the task of building many, many more camps.
From the same EO - apparently we can all tune in to our re-education next year. Also this thing is chock full of 'teachers better not ever discuss, even amongst themselves, the idea that poc might have a different life experience that could affect their access to education'
Would any of the people advancing this measure be willing to say, on the record, that the New Deal, the Warren Court, and the Civil Rights Act were all unalloyed goods that made this country better? How about the Obama years?
You don't get to RETVRN and say all history is progress.

Because the idea that we are aspirational and trying to improve to meet the aspirations works for me
But what are the aspirations?
And what is being overcome as we work towards it
"So...there was a point where America was, y'know, *not* close to its noble principles?"
"Wel---um, why, no! It's always been, like, super close to them!"
"You sure?"
"Shut up"

Is there anything these morons aren't insecure about?
Can you really love your country if you pretend its history doesn't exist?
Amplification rather that alloy?
I dunno. Having a pint. Or is it?
You know: everything these so-called "conservatives" reject
Well, technically started Monday, but it’ll be ongoing throughout the semester.
So I’ve heard, anyway ;)
Is Orwell's 1945 essay in the new curriculum?
That's coming. Write it down.
“Dumb Bullshit”
"A new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."
Goody.

In this case, many teachers will be put in a place where abiding by the terms of their employment will put them at odds with this EO

Next order is just going to come out and say it:
"War is peace."
"Freedom is slavery."
"ignorance is strength."
In other-words trash education.
There will be a have - have-nots education caste.

So Christian creepy

They can’t do anything that isn’t downright stupid.
All. The. Way.
