Controversial from the POV of should-these-places-be-preserved, I mean.

Disgraceful! We have similar place in Rhode Island (though not a plantation) but they educate people abt slave trade through tours, exhibits, visiting lecturers, creative writers residency, annual Frederick Douglass event, Juneteenth healing ceremony & celebration. Still controversial but not hidden

Also, if you didn't know, there was also a virtual protest for anyone who couldn't be there in person. I hope that continues to happen!

No kidding! Neither Mark or I had heard of it before the doc! I love that for you.

I really loved it too. I think the (understandable) media spectacle of the hidden apartment didn't uncover what the film's messaging was - that art and life can be inextricable, that artists are not frivolous but intentional as evidenced by the tape art projects the installation seemed to support.

I'm so sorry. Absolutely horrific and unfair.

I agree about the cruelty. And you're probably right about the rest. Still baffled why countries of origin wouldn't take their own citizens back. Gather there's also some kind of money making scheme involved in the detention centers. Just UGH. Sick.

Horrific. Why would they want to keep people detained vs. releasing them in other countries? I would say it's to scare future migrants away with particularly cruel punishment, but this is so far out of sight. So...?

Assuming it's some kind of a service, but also makes me weary of human-seeming bots.
