I work in progressive politics. I live in rural AB. I occasionally surprise people with one or both of the above.

Trump policies are monumentally wrong, aims to hurt American people, and is destroying America rapidly. Sen. Cory Booker lays it out…

How low you have fallen.

Trump lied? Say it isn't so. www.cnn.com/2025/03/10/p...

To the world: We are fighting back. Our movement has been silenced by the media here—but we are not backing down. This is what our streets looked like across multiple cities. Tomorrow, there will be more of us! Raise a glass to freedom. —With love, Your American allies.

Commit this to your memory. Quote it while you resist.

Here is my best guidance for action, rendered beautifully by the great John Lithgow. I first published these lessons more than eight years ago, in late 2016. They open the twenty chapters of "On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century." snyder.substack.com/p/twenty-les...

I’m not the first to point this out, but just in case you missed it on this Liberation Day, President Big Brain thinks his tariffs apply to illegal shipments of fentanyl, making the drug more expensive to American junkies.

I'm drawing my line in the sand - 50/50 chance I get fired from my job as a Business Representative tomorrow. An excerpt from my open letter to the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers regarding their endorsement of Pierre Poilievre. #cdnpoli #elxn2025 #elbowsup

I’m devastated, but I’m also angry. I’m angry because this is an attack on press freedom. If opportunities can be stripped from journalists simply because enough people repeat the same bad-faith narrative, how can anyone withstand the career impact of doing work that matters?

Cory Booker is doing what every single Dem Senator should be doing - using his one voice and few procedural tools to gum up the gears of government. This is how Opposition parties work. About time the Americans figure out what effective Canadian opposition parties have known for ages.

The two leading contenders for prime minister have deep personal roots in the West. Yet Conservatives in the region argue that the West is "left out" of national decisionmaking? And that there's a "national unity crisis"? You don't have to believe them.

I really don't know how to explain to folks that we should care for other people. Sure they'll reverse the policy. But the evil part remains...some asshat thought this was a good idea in the first place. The UCP needs to go. Reason #9346 #ableg #abpoli #canpoli

Everything is going great! Reading the news is relaxing! I sleep well thinking about the state of the world! What an April Fools Joke I have played on you all!

You have to see this. PoliticsGirl and her husband teamed up with the brilliant Timothy Snyder (author of On Tyranny) and the legendary John Lithgow to create something truly powerful. It’s important, it’s urgent—and it needs to be shared far and wide.

When you look at the list of institutions they want to defund: libraries, museums, the Smithsonian, public schools, PBS, NPR, archives, you can clearly see that the real threat to an authoritarian regime is an informed and educated public

For years, political experts have warned that America is in a state of democratic decline. Now some say democracy in the US could be giving way to something else entirely: an oligarchy.

Dysfunction in Conservative-land: “Yet another source said the campaign has a ‘weird fixation’ with relatively minor issues, like how the media is reporting Poilievre's rally crowd sizes.” by CBC colleagues in Ottawa and tracking the Poilievre campaign www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

The Conservatives will start Week 2 of the campaign in the midst of a full-blown internal meltdown. Then, April 2 with another round of Trump tariffs. youtu.be/L1-clfQlua8?...

🇨🇦 70% drop in flight bookings from #Canada to #US? Hmmn. I wonder why???? #Elbowsup #CanadaStrong #never51 #tariff #cdnpoli #travel www.thestar.com/business/yea...

Reminds me to re-read Scott’s Weapons of the Weak. We can learn from many other resistance movements who have fought oppressors. Clog the wheels. Break the tools. Feign ignorance. and on and on.

There's something needs to be said: You don't need to be gay to stick up for your gay friends Or trans to stick up for your trans friends Or Jewish or Muslim or Hindu or black or white You only need to be good people To stick up for your friends One Love

This Jason Stanley interview made me stop my car to listen. I was late for work but it was worth it. His message is key for Albertans: If you attempt to appease fascists you only get humiliated or worse! Our Premier should stop bending knee to Trump. Fight with Team Canada!

When Shapiro once again referred to Canada as the 51st state, Smith’s response? “‘I come in peace,’ Smith said to loud applause.”

My updated forecast using the 26 March CBC polling averages has the Liberal Party winning a majority in almost every simulation, and an average of 184 seats across the 10,000 simulations. There are some dire outcomes for the NDP, with some simulations resulting in zero seats.

AB Premier Danielle Smith is sure helping PM Carney tie this election win up. I wonder if that was her intent? Hmmmm…🤣🤣

Pete is right, as usual. These people cannot keep America safe. I’m embarrassed to be an American now more than ever. @petebuttigieg.bsky.social

Quite literally my jaw dropped and I didn’t believe the headline. Astonishing.

My young adult son is in 🇬🇧and immediately registered to vote from abroad. This is an indication of the excitement about the federal election - it’s go time! Please share link with Canadians abroad - time is ticking. #Vote #Carney travel.gc.ca/travelling/l...

~"Smith was scheduled to speak at the University of Alberta for an unrelated announcement on Monday. That event was postponed on Sunday afternoon." The bad publicity is getting to Smith. She's avoiding questions she knows will be about her interview and #CorruptCare.

Dear America, You need to take a long look in the mirror and ask yourself what your limits are. Very quickly. This is fucking bananas.

It boggles the mind how Premier Smith can take a harder line stance against the prime minister of her own country than the president of an enemy nation. If she's unsure who is the bigger threat, her advisors have failed all Albertans miserably.

Apparently the unprecedented national unity crisis is a second fair deal panel in six months.

exactly. And it means we should travel there with the same expectations of the rule of law as we would in any autocracy- ie with no expectation of safety or rule of law. (Avoid travel as much as possible!)

Welp, there goes the US defense industry.

Fun 🧵 Canadian workers participated more in Victory bonds in WWII than American workers. U.S.: 45% bought bonds through payroll deductions Canada: 97% In the U.S. only 27% of bonds were sold to individuals, the rest to corporations and institutions. Here: half were bought by individuals. Why? 1/n

Great investigative reporting here re: the lack of transparency about, and enforcement of, orphan well owners in Alberta. It shows how farcically useless the Alberta Energy Regulator is.

Most Albertans don't care much for the type of bluster, brinksmanship, and ultimatums displayed by Premier Smith earlier today. Data courtesy @cgroundpolitics.bsky.social (Jan 2023, n=1213).

~A statement from Zachary Weeks, a disability advocate re the UCP clawback of the CDB from AISH. "The CDB was not meant to subsidize provincial budgets."

This thread is 100% worth your time and every image has alt text. Hell yes.

Seems police are being dispatched to protect Telsa dealerships across the USA. Maybe all schools in the USA should sell one Telsa in their parking lot so kids can be protected too.

The scale of Danielle Smith's Turkish Tylenol screw-up staggers me every time I see the number: $70 million!! Now she's tries to get someone to take it off her hands, for nothing, to reduce her warehouse cost. One of the biggest screwups in Alberta history. Let's not forget.

The FLQ kidnapped and murdered Quebec Labour Minister Pierre Laporte, so what does Premier Danielle Smith mean when she says "unprecedented national unity crisis." 😬 www.alberta.ca/release.cfm?...

I, a climate policy nerd, have been too irate to talk about this Poilievre promise to scrap the industrial carbon price, an output-based allocation policy for big polluters. Sound boring? Because it is. So boring that it’s been AB law since 2008. Terrible for emissions. Also bad for business.

Curious & couriouser. LPC move into majority territory, CPC slips and NDP face loss of party status. Carney’s strategy shld be to go now w shortest campaign possible, deny the CPC a chance to regroup. The day after elxn, Wab Kinew’s phone rings off the hook

I had an excellent call with President von der Leyen about the road ahead for Canada-E.U. trade. Canada and Europe are strong, reliable partners. In a shifting global economy, that matters more than ever. We’re ready to secure new transatlantic business opportunities together.

Nobody shld be sleeping on what is actually happening. From DOGE to attacks on media access, through threats of annexation against sovereign nations, it is all connected. www.chronicle.com/article/were...
