We’ll be Planning April, May, & June on 21 March. Everyone is tired this time of year. There are lots of transitions, some real crunches, and also some real opportunities for writing. Learn more and join us.

Are you meeting with USians this week?? WE CHANGED OUR CLOCKS on Sunday 9 March. Please check with us and confirm meeting times!

Structured writing retreats are odd-sounding things if you haven't tried one. If writing is solitary, why write in the company of others? One answer is to liken a structured writing retreat & its facilitator to your yoga class & instructor. Can you develop a yoga practice on your own? Sure! But...

Finally got up the gumption to walk up Ulia with the doggo and look back over Donostia. 🤩

I want your text to go to its key pre-publication readers in its best possible shape so those readers can help you make it even better. But even with your best effort, it's easy to under-revise if you don't use a thorough, systematic revision process. 1/4

Why Swedish-speaking Finns are hoping to be sent to Eurovision by Sweden. A fascinating read on the complexity of official languages and language attitudes within and across national boundaries.

Jo's planning sessions are so helpful + she's an excellent facilitator. This one happens to clash with my upcoming online structured writing retreat (20-21 March) but you don't have to choose! You can attend a future session's of Jo's or my 14-15 April retreat. www.linguaverse.net/writing-retr...

I know that my typing fingers are just reverting to well known spelling pathways, yet I'm pleased to think that perhaps there's some sense of solidarity behind my continual rendering of 'menstruation' as 'menstruaction' in this feminist, non-hegemonic take on menstruation I'm translating... 🤔

#PubMed has been down for some people and currently appears broken, or inaccessible. Smarter people than I can speculate on what's going on, but my worry is particular research being targeted for deletion from the database. All of us whose research can be found via PubMed must backup publications.

Hello March

Co-sign! Excellent points from @drhelenkara.bsky.social. I don't use or even play with these text-extruding tools. I remain wary of their output, that they have not been sufficiently safeguarded and that little has been done to mitigate the environmental damage. And I have no trust in the makers.

A useful thing that academics and others can do is provide explainers to local media. This is a nice example from my former @mccourtschool.bsky.social colleague Bill Gormley. www.post-gazette.com/opinion/insi...

Although many academics don’t like to admit it, most struggle with writing at one time or another—and for good reason. The task of writing is cognitively complex and mostly solitary. And when the pressure is on, it can also feel overwhelming and it's harder to do your best work. [1/6] #AcWri

👋 Academic writers: I'm running 3 online structured writing retreats in Feb-April, 1.5 days each. First up is 27-28 Feb: www.linguaverse.net/27-28-feb. The other dates are 20-21 March & 14-15 April; accessible via the link. Why bother retreating? [1/3] #AcWri #StructuredWriting #SocialWriting

Black British Sign Language project PhD studentship at the University of Birmingham (BSL translation of the ad will soon be provided): contact me if you're interested! 😀https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/scholarships-and-funding/postgraduate-scholarships/125-linguistics-communication

Also, more people need to realise that GenAI is NOT a translator. Only ever use it for translation if you actually know the source language so you can check the result for mistakes. (Or, better still, use a professional translator who knows what they are doing.)

Modern-Day Oracles or Bullshit Machines? Jevin West (@jevinwest.bsky.social) and I have spent the last eight months developing the course on large language models (LLMs) that we think every college freshman needs to take. thebullshitmachines.com

Fascinating problem: What if your product is so successful that no one learns to write anymore and thus can't apply for jobs at your company?

I finally launched my own newsletter! I'm happy to be albeit write what I want when I want. And to put a lot of short in-the-moment essays that used to be on FB at this site instead. Please subscribe! meditations-in-an-emergency.ghost.io/welcome-to-m...

'Niece' and 'nephew' aren't the original English words. They were borrowed from French and supplanted native 'nift' and 'neve', direct cognates of German 'Nichte' and 'Neffe'. The French words have the same Proto-Indo-European ancestors so they're cognates too, but very distant ones. Here's more:

Would be super grateful if all #language #langsky and #linguistics peeps could share this postdoc job offer.

Did you know you can limit search and replace in a Word document to specific parts of the document, like the footnotes or comments? I just found this out, and it was a huge timesaver for cleaning up a bunch of footnotes. www.wordsbywes.ink/a... #AmEditing

There's still time to get a proposal in for a presentation at #METM25 (16-18 October, Barcelona). At METM25 we'll also be celebrating 20 years of MET meetings, so lots of good stuff will be happening. Check out the CfP 👇, and get in touch if you have queries. 🕰️ Submissions accepted through 14 Feb.
