This is VERY good blog from @robinince.bsky.social, motivated by a questionable (in my view) comment by Tim Minchin...and it takes me back to something a senior, white man made at EGU during a debate about renaming an award after a women; "But who will young, white, male scientists look up to...?" 🥴

Great podcast episode with calm news 👇from Glennon and Amanda Doyle speaking with Jessica Yellin and a few tips at the end including why it may be important to protect your credit info from attack podcasts.apple.com/fr/podcast/w...

Pitched a piece to my hometown paper and they responded within like 10 minutes saying they definitely want to see it. So yeah, I think this has potential

"This feels like the early days of the pandemic, except there's less I can do about it", a colleague told me yesterday. Yep. One thing you *can* do is outreach. My sense is that the majority of the country doesn't yet understand the scale or the stakes of what is happening. We have to tell them:

I maxed out my credit card, emptied my savings account, and took out a loan to move from Alabama to Bethesda, MD. I don’t even qualify for unemployment since I’ve only worked at NIH for a month. I will be financially and medically devastated. Seeking suggestions for anywhere that’s hiring!!

I wrote much of what I think about this election before it happened, so I am going to put it all together here. My book, Autocracy Inc, described the network of autocrats who seek to undermine democracy, inside their countries and ours www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/725302...

The Department of Government Efficiency isn't interested in efficiency. Or transparency, or cutting costs. It's real goal is to destroy the federal civil service. In other words, regime change. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

“It’s frankly staggering that Bristol Airport is yet again planning to expand. The last thing our city and the region needs is yet more carbon emissions from flights, more traffic congestion, more noise, and worsening air quality.” @cllremmaedwards.bsky.social

CDC source: “We just had word that all our fellows and post doc staff are laid off effective immediately. The famous Epidemic Intelligence Service, aka the Disease Detectives, is no more. That’s 1260 staff. They are calling this ‘Phase 1’.”

Wow, they found fungal hyphae inside the sheaths of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria! Usually with these types of symbiosis it's the other way around, with bacteria growing inside their host. This is supercool!🧪 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

‘Don’t let algorithms or billionaires hijack your focus. Master the techniques you care about. Read papers that ignite your curiosity. Your work is your rebellion.´👇 is a timely post with advice on reframing amongst this chaos.

This is a nice story. The kids were protesting anti-DEI instructions that would have intruded on their celebration of Black History Month and threatened LGBTQ+. Their teachers and school admin supported them. (US higher ed, you might take a page out of their book.)

Elon Musk, the world's richest man, is securing real beneifits as he helps Trump disrupt the federal government. Just how? The NYT takes a deep look today at these benefits: federal investigations targeting Musk companies that have been disrupted or now may die. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/11/u...

Is your NSF grant on this list? Reach out if so! Ted Cruz released a list of grants flagged for DEI or "neo-Marxist class warfare propaganda" from his Oct. report. NSF is using keywords from that report for their review, though Cruz's list is likely larger. www.commerce.senate.gov/2025/2/cruz-...

Labour's disgusting deportation stunt this week wasn't just morally bankrupt, it was politically stupid. Politicians need to find the backbone to be honest about the real source of our problems: the wealthy elite draining money from our communities metro.co.uk/2025/02/11/l...

We collectively haven’t been taking the plans laid out by Project 2025 seriously enough. They want to destroy NOAA so people won’t know that climate change is happening. It sounds stupid and alarmist if you haven’t been paying attention.
