“Don’t be an idiot, Harry. Just ask him for directions.”

#OTD in 1916 HMS Ladybird was launched. She participated in COMPASS and after sinking in shallow water in Tobruk port provided air defense against the constant bombing during the siege. Insect gunboats provided fire support as late as Operation HUSKY. #navalhistory @karljames1945.bsky.social

Grain Piglet is my nickname at the local bakery.

We think your trouble is not want of memory, but a vacant mind.

Among all the nurdles and microplastics on the strandline, a tiny red Lego flower, one of 161,264 red Lego flowers lost overboard from the Tokio Express back in 1997. Still turning up, 28 years on. #oceanplastic #marinedebris #Cornwall

And then of course there’s Mr Mouse

This pair of early 1820s portraits show sitters who are highly fashionable, despite the fact that they could only afford A. Ellis (a folk painter with limited skills in representative art) to depict them, though in rural early 19thc Maine artists might have been hard to come by! 🗃️🪡

I heard this photo in an Irish accent.

Amazing that without even mentioning a name, EVERYONE knows exactly who it's referencing.

In Norse mythology, the greatest ship was Skíðblaðnir. It was owned by the god Freyr, and could carry all of the gods and their retinue over sea, land, and air, faster than any other ship. Skíðblaðnir could also be folded up, and put in Freyr's pocket when not needed. 🎨Harun El #WyrdWednesday

suing my kindergarten teacher for forcing propaganda such as "sharing" and "playing well with others" into my daily way of life

I don't know how the phrase "tree hugger" can ever be seen as an insult. Hugging trees is a great. Even better is waking up in a tree's arms and telling it your dreams.

#Frockingfabulous birthday salute to #VivienneWestwood!: This. Colour. It’s "Bird of Paradise", as worn by Dita Von Teese in 2005! #Fashionhistory via the V&A. C'est tout, mes amis, thanks for joining me for our day of Dame VW!

I'm a fully-grown adult and I still get a frisson of excitement when I come across a Police Box in real life.

Chamboi is a critically endangered black rhino, part of a global population of just over 6,000. Orphaned as a newborn, he has a home and family with us for as long as he needs it. When he's ready, he'll reclaim his place in the wild. Discover Chamboi’s story at: swt.bio/chamboi

With a grey dull Sydney dawn only an hour away, the thought of a bland shot did not appeal. Instead, a hotel and the House while the lights still impacted.

One of the things I always find hard to describe to foreigners about Iceland is how blue the light is, and how although it keeps changing with the seasons it somehow always remains blue. This just popped up in memories. It was taken at 9.55 am in January at Lake Mývatn.

See it say it sorted

When the news adds a number after a name, that's not an age, that the clone number.

Delighted to say that lamb racing season has started. Just the most joyous thing to watch.

The phrase “knock on wood” - or “touch wood” in the UK - is an ancient one deriving from the belief that tapping on trees awakes the gods and spirits that reside within them and brings good luck.

Yes it could be argued that keeping up with world events is important but alternatively can I interest you in hugging an ancient mossy boulder that looks like a face and quietly listening while it tells you stories from centuries cloaked in mist.

Historians are going to have better records from the 19th century than the 21st, is my most medievalist futurist prediction.

For decades, men's adventure magazines - as many as 160 different titles - were all over newsstands and drug store magazine racks. They're mostly forgotten now, but I wrote about the wild mags for @crimereads.bsky.social crimereads.com/mens-adventu...
