I feel this is replicated in the UK. Bored people with no real problems fuming at stories in the Mail and Telegraph. Setting up campaigns against wind farms. It’s a well known fact that many of the people furious about immigration live in areas with the fewest immigrants

i think this is basically what has happened a big chunk of the american pundit class

"Whereas Socialism, and even capitalism in a more grudging way, have said to people “I offer you a good time,’’ Hitler has said to them “I offer you struggle, danger and death,” and as a result a whole nation flings itself at his feet" – George Orwell, Review of Mein Kampf

They are also largely people at the top of local society who therefore experience even the smallest criticism as injustice.

"anarcho-communist? oh, no, you misheard me. I'm an arachno-communist. I believe we shouldn't have private property, and also the only legitimate form of government is THE SPIDER"

Today (Feb 22) in 1943, three courageous young people in the group White Rose were executed for distributing anti-Nazi leaflets in Germany. Sophie Scholl: "The greatest damage is caused by the silent majority that just wants to survive, submit and go along with everything."

Becoming increasingly convinced that it's a major shortcoming of sex ed that we don't tell teens "You know, it's OK to just *not like sex*. You don't have to feel socially obligated to do it, even in some limited/ circumscribed 'right' context like marriage, you can just not like it at all" enough.

criminal destruction of our sector, when its gone itll be missed and be basically impossible to rebuild www.theguardian.com/science/2025...

One day there will be a show about maths that—instead of showing a spotless white-walled room covered in equations or glass panels with equations readable from the wrong side—focuses on things mathematicians care about, viz, coffee, wearing shorts all year round, and a free supply of Hagoromo chalk.

Boy that certainly raises questions.

Dear Manager, this week: 1. I discovered there is a ranch. 2. It is called Number 51. 3. It is invisible. 4. Unless you fly directly overhead. 5. The climate there is inhospitably hot.

We put a computer that could access all the worlds knowledge in everyone’s pocket and people mostly used it to spread lies.

Because of course.

For #FolkloreSunday theme of cats: in Bugis mythology of South Sulawesi, Meong Palo Karrellae is the name of tri-color cats; guardians of crops loyal to Sangiang Serri, the rice goddess. In La Galigo epic poem, the goddess judged humans from the way they treated a stray tri-color cat. 1/2

Although Meloni expressed support for Ukraine in her speech, her embrace of Trump is also driven by internal politics. She doesn't want to leave the pro-Trump camp to Salvini and Conte.

1. The Home Office should not be running some kind of in-house identity verification service. 2. It should definitely not be emailing even low level bulk personal data around 3. Migration policy should be taken away from the Home Office as it has driven them mad.

Exploited migrant farm workers in UK paid for picks, not hours. Workers not paid for in-work travel, time spent moving between workstations, team meetings, receiving instructions on equipment use. Employers violating employment rights. Need effective enforcement, not deregulation.

This is what happens when our glorious leaders don’t understand the difference between technology and magic. Is there any way of getting through to them on this?!

If you can be bothered, this sets out why Alter Mitty was sacked and not smeared.

The Starmer aide/AI stuff feels a bit canary/coalmine because this isn't letting electoral factors triumph over good governance or sinply doing something I don't like - things every government does - this is falling for a scam. There are people in Nunber 10 who are just idiots.

boy I didn't not realize how absurdly accomplished Robeson was even before he was a singer. He was class valedictorian at Rutgers, where he was the lone Black student, *and* a two-time All-American, *and lettered in multiple sports* then he did his law degree at Columbia while playing in the NFL.

To be clear Mr Starmer, I appreciate you’ve got a difficult job on Thursday, but I do not want a fascist dictator invited to my country for a state visit or addressing my Parliament.

Was literally talking to a former senior UK MoD person involved in nuclear matters who was terrified Trump would figure out the Trident common pool could be leverage with Starmer—now this in the FT www.ft.com/content/762c...

From Religious Studies at York Twitter account: The administration at York University has suspended admissions to the Religious Studies program . . . The faculty have written this statement. We ask you to will distribute it widely and write to York's administration to protest this decision.

I would broadly encourage people to think about how thin a shield “well I won’t go to prison then” could prove, and how quickly that could start to go bad. It gives a sense of the timeline you need to be able to react on for departure plans.

the way the American left and center-left neglect Spanish isn't as bad as it would be for, say, a Canadian party to neglect French, but it is still a rather serious self-inflicted wound

Redwall critters are legend-myth, yes-yes? Rodent-creatures do not stand on leg-limbs and fight with weapon-swords, no-no. Pay no mind-attention to anything you might see that says otherwise, especially if they're hold-carrying warpstone!

fun fact, this is pretty much exactly how classical chinese works

By contrast, working class immigrants and their working class families are clearly not worthy of this respect. Hence this gaslighting that the wide-ranging hostility they have faced for decades from many sectors of British society is no more than the "concerns" of primarily working class people.

Streaming gets a lot of flak, but I think people frequently forget how prohibitively expensive (socially and financially) it used to be to explore different musical genres. This is one area where I am hugely jealous of today's teenagers.

if you're in the UK and have an outdoor cat (like most UK cats), I would be seriously thinking about switching them to an inside cat given the bird flu situation; there's already been dozens of US cat cases (where outdoor cats are much rarer but bird flu growing) and UK bird flu cases are rising
