I would argue it's been long before 2008, I was living in Brighton in 97 homelessness was rife there back then. Perhaps Brighton was an outlier for the time.

We had tramps too, but I guess to some extent theirs was a voluntary kind of homelessness , dropping out of society for some reason or another. There was one I used to speak with in town, used to be a teacher in a public school, very eloquent man, had a breakdown of some sort.

When I was a kid 50 years ago, never really saw begging, never really saw homeless people, it existed of course but not like today . Thatcher & her heirs have taken the safety net away.
