A new website created by about a dozen federal employees, called “We the Builders,” aims to be a secure outlet for government workers to share stories about how their workplaces are being impacted by DOGE, and a place to explain the real-world impact of its access to government tech systems.

“In recent weeks, Patriot Front has also targeted communities in Littlefield, Arizona; Ontario, California; Sarasota, Florida; Amicalola, Georgia; South Bend, Indiana; Reno, Nevada; Clarksville and Jackson, Tennessee; Herriman, Utah; and Rock Springs, Wyoming.”

I regret* to inform you that @propublica.org has updated our DOGE tracker again with a bunch more names: projects.propublica.org/elon-musk-do... *delight

I heard the NEA is only considering proposals related to 1776 & the USA’s 250th birthday & I was feeling intensely patriotic, so I’m printing these really big posters inspired *directly* by the Founding Fathers The cut was carved from the masthead of a 19th century newspaper

NEW: Pregnancy became far more dangerous in Texas after the state banned abortion, according to ProPublica’s first-of-its-kind analysis, which found the sepsis rate for women hospitalized as they miscarried in the 2nd trimester shot up by more than 50%. https://propub.li/43487Tj

Imagine if he found federal funds for disasters without the agency, but only gave them to red states. Imagine. A new way to punish blue states.

Hugely important investigation from my @propublica.org colleagues here

I think it's good to acknowledge sometimes you're just sitting in the archive quietly crying.

"Uninhibited access to archives is — and should be — an essential characteristic of a democracy."

@ncph.bsky.social is currently taking pitches for articles on public history and advocacy for its famed History@Work blog. The hope is to learn from past advocacy work to help us move into the future. Please share! The CFP is here: ncph.org/wp-content/u...

"After President Donald Trump canceled a report on the state of nature in the US, the scientists ... say they’ll continue their work and build on it." "Many publishers have since stepped forward..." "Copy editors, artists and others have volunteered to help." www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news...

They are attempting to enforce a new Lost Cause narrative. Just as the original justified Jim Crow, reshaping and constricting our public memory concerning Black contributions and the national struggle against slavery and racism paves the way for the assault on civil rights and re-segregation.

Is there anyone out there making a database or otherwise publicly keeping track of the history, narratives and identities they are censoring? We will need this.

roses are red, gymnasts do flips here is a place to send @propublica.org reporters your tips www.propublica.org/article/seco...

The Trump administration has flown about 100 immigrants to Guantanamo Bay. Perla Trevizo and I identified nearly a dozen of them and spoke to relatives of three of them. www.propublica.org/article/trum...

High priority ED civil rights investigations for the second Trump admin: Discrimination against white students. Trans women in sports. All-gender bathrooms. Antisemitism. Thousands of other pending OCR investigations have ground to a halt. Here's what @jodiscohen.bsky.social and I uncovered.

Reminder: Black history offers many examples of fighting authoritarianism, so one doesn't always have to look to Europe. Nazi lawyers looked to Jim Crow for inspiration for their racist laws. Read as much about struggles against Jim Crow as you do about other examples of resisting authoritarianism

This possibly won't receive as much attention as the mess at Stonewall but articles, tours, and other items related to transgender history have been removed from across the nps.gov websites. 🗃️

Erasing public access to digital history tools is supposedly against PBS’ mission. How can they ask their regular donors — Viewers Like You — to continue to support when they concede to alarming rules that aren’t even laws?

NEW: Vera Rubin was a pioneering female astronomer. The federal webpage for an observatory named for her now excludes mention of efforts to diversify science. “I’m sure Vera would be absolutely furious,” said a co-author of a biography of Rubin. By @lisalsong.bsky.social

Harvard laid off the staff members who do the research for its Slavery Remembrance Program Thursday. The program is part of the $100 million "Harvard and the Legacy of Slavery Initiative". The project’s director said Harvard is trying to repress the number of descendants uncovered in the project.

Digital History Klaxon: Looking for collaborators to submit a session to @historians.org on digital history projects for broad audiences. My team is looking to present on Searchablemuseum.com and are looking for other projects, theme/region/period agnostic!

my latest @teenvogue.bsky.social my heart broke watching Pasadena, Octavia Butler's hometown, where her middle school is named for her, burn. 5 schools have been damaged. "Octavia knew"—so did Mike Davis—from studying history. denialism and targeting libraries got us here. what will we do?

I’d been wanting to volunteer for this project since forever, but finally made it to a research session yesterday & I’ll definitely be back. If you’ve got an hour or 2 free on a Friday, think about spending it with them.

Yessss. Follow @taylorkatebrown.bsky.social 🙌

Hello everyone! We are the Chicago Covenants Project. A research project based in Chicago that discovers racial covenants here in Cook County. Our research schedule is attached below. Have questions? Please DM us!

It should be said that @anniewaldman.bsky.social asked UnitedHealthcare for comment over a month ago. Asked again 11 days ago, a spokesperson for the company said “we are in mourning” and that they could not engage with a “non-urgent story during this incredibly difficult moment in time.”

One of the steps I used to report this was to search Idaho news archives for "get away with murder." No joke. It is that obvious that our death investigations and coroner systems are broken. www.propublica.org/article/idah...

“I thought we had learned a lot from history and that we’ve grown a lot, and we haven’t,” said Hernandez.

what is your favorite website on the internet right now? my most visited webpage this week is “radical online collections and archives” collection compiled by dr evan b smith:

Follow @cassandrajaramillo.bsky.social to keep up with ProPublica's reporting on the effects of abortion bans 👇 And if you haven't, read her story on Josseli Barnica, a Texas woman who died after being told it would be a "crime" to intervene in her miscarriage:

Thanks to our very wise Board of Trustees, one of the courses I normally teach (LGBTQ History), along with 431 others, will no longer count toward the fulfillment of general education requirements. Just another day in the “Free State of Florida.” 🗃️

As Trump prepares for a second term, The 19th is pulling together allegations of sexual assault and harassment against the president-elect’s Cabinet-level picks. Here is what we have found:

Here’s a direct link to the portal: crcca.archives.gov A 2018 law requires federal agencies to identify cold cases from the Civil Rights era and make their records public. This seems to be the first pass to do that …

I’m going to say something historians rarely say. We haven’t been here before. We haven’t had a near-authoritarian takeover of our government. Admittedly, we don’t know what comes next. There’s a wide array of options. But know that in the US, this is new ground. And none of this is normal.
