For cards? I dont know.
For the games? Stop having them be a technical embarrassment would be a start.

Engagement farming is by far the worst thing.
It lurks underneath the game and tries to manipulate human psychology to get people to play more and thus, spend more.

The intent for P5 was to do it in small chunks. SP items were supposed to be scarce and when you were out you get out and restock / heal... But nobody did that. Everyone bought SP patches and one days the dungeons because managing time is a mechanic in the game and you dont want to waste time.

This is a serious pacing issue a lot of modern rpgs have. Persona 5 is like 30% characters explaining points that didnt need explanation, and useless flashbacks.
Fantasian is 40+ hours but it has a ton of formulaic filler too.

Saw Chrono Trigger in Nintendo Power. Looked cool but never played an RPG before. Rented "FF3" to see if we liked the genre. We continued to rent it over and over until we beat it.

Final time with the game was over 40 hours and the character development and scenario writing was paper thin... Though I did play on hard mode, which I learned later just inflates the HP and stats of bosses a little... Still, the game has good boss encounter design and I liked how it challenged me.

I just finished it. The game goes out of its way to waste your time as much as possible. Want your final level of skills? Ok, do these 8 mini maze dungeons and fight a recycled boss at the end of each mini maze. It's "optional" but there's no way in hell you're beating the last bosses without it
