Community platforms expertise (Discord) and experience with challenging content moderation (ideally mods/UGC) are the key things I'm looking for. Traditional social media skills are mostly irrelevant for this role. Proven community experience in games is required.

I think Reddit is a super interesting case considering their own ways if handling moderation (decentralized but centrally coordinated). I could honestly see them benefiting quite a bit from these changes if they manage to maintain their current approach.

Nothing super new. Discord for engaging with your core community and TikTok for reach and growth have already pretty much been the standards in the past years, but I expect this will accelerate. We'll also see more brands ditching X/FB simply to mitigate risks, and because they don't see ROI.

Which is not to say these platforms can't generate value, especially by exposing your content to more people by taking advantage of the algorithm (plenty of great examples on TikTok for gaming communities), but they're not the place where you'll be able to build and engage with your community.

You want to control the content associated with your brand and community, and to retain some ability to shape it in a direction that serves your strategy and objectives. Algorithms and these changes in moderation guidelines prevent you from doing this on X/FB/Insta/TikTok.

I don't have the expertise with online advertising that I have with content moderation, but it still feels like a very risky bet to me. Lots of unknown, especially how the whole advertising / performance marketing / brand safety ecosystem and standards will adjust.

On the other end, Meta is actually pretty good with advertising even if their model has suffered from GDPR and the general decline of their main platform in the West. And imho they need that revenue, especially if their other bets for the future of the company continue to fail (VR, Metaverse, AI).

Twitter was always pretty crap for advertising, and Musk made it completely useless. It hurt him, which is why he's been so pissed with advertising/brand safety people, but at the end of the day it didn't matter, he bought Twitter to build a political propaganda machine, not to make money.

The math is probably that the cost saving + risk of becoming a target for the Trump government outweighs the loss in advertising revenue. Seeing how advertising completely died on Twitter/X following Musk guidelines, I'm however not convinced.

I hope it's still an option a few years from now, but the accelerating destruction of net neutrality makes me think the whole technology might eventually collapse .

I've no idea what the next communications and information thing will be; but I'm fairly certain kids born today will see the internet with the same disdain that my generation has for TV today, a fully corrupted, unusable channel of constant garbage with zero value.
