My latest essay is up. “Selma is Stronger than MAGA: On Loving Your Country.” Inspired by the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday…and, ironically Justice Kennedy. READ AND SHARE. open.substack.com/pub/sherrily...

I don't post much. This was intended to be where I share cool polar science, and photos of birds and the natural beauty of Oregon. However ... I'm also a climate scientist, and now a beneficiary of cancer research. Attacks on climate research and NIH health research are appalling.

America’s advantage in science made us rich, and kept us powerful. It’s why we have the most innovative companies, the most successful tech sector and the mightiest military. Why is Trump trying to slaughter the golden goose? wapo.st/41iUzAW

Hear Dr @taimoorsohail.bsky.social discuss this important work on Australia's ABC Radio National. So good for people across our nation to hear about this finding and the risks associated - nice job Taimoor! 🌊 www.abc.net.au/listen/progr...

Per senior USAID official, Trump Adm actions likely to cause * up to 18m additional cases of malaria; 166k additional deaths * 200k children paralyzed with polio * 1m children not treated for malnutrition * 28k new cases of infectious disease www.nytimes.com/2025/03/02/h...

This is Marco Rubio explaining how the USA promised to defend Ukraine forever if they got rid of their nuclear arsenal left after the Soviet Union fell. This is why lil marco was sinking into the couch. He was hoping we wouldn’t find it…so don’t RT right now this very second.

Follow @bassisjeremy.bsky.social for thoughtful commentary on US science

More and more scientists are joining the ranks of fired federal workers—and fighting back through protests, appeals, and legal challenges.

It is time for all of our societies to speak up about this attack on US science. Speak now, please! @agu.org @nationalacademies.org @igsoc.bsky.social

NEW: NSF confirmed that they fired 168 employees today, out of their staff of ~1,500 feds. This includes some people who'd finished their 1-year probationary periods, which were extended to 2-years last month without explanation. More to come.

"see no climate change, hear no climate change, speak no climate change"

Research Experiences for Undergraduates are wonderful programs funded by the National Science Foundation to show young people what doing actual research is really like. The value per dollar spent is off the charts. What are we doing here.

Cold (-7 C) and clear morning in Corvallis. Sunrise in the "back yard". Three Sisters in the Cascade Mountains in the background.

A new paper about the Antarctic Ice Sheet in a special issue of @science.org reviews critical knowledge gaps in our understanding of how Antarctica responds to variations in global climate. Antarctica in 2025: Drivers of deep uncertainty in projected ice loss www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Second paper from Ole Richter's PhD, with @DavidGwyther4 and Ben Galton-Fenzi. Shows tides must be included in ice-ocean models. The impact of tides on Antarctic ice shelf melting@Ant_Partnership @AntarcticSciAus @Ant_Gateway tc.copernicus.org/articles/16/14…

Last week there was a Special Issue in @science.org on "The Polar World" It contained three reviews -- "Antarctica in 2025" (led by me), “Disappearing Landscapes” (Arctic, by Julienne Stroeve) and a 3rd on Antarctic biodiversity www.science.org/toc/science/... 1/14

BREAKING: 22 states sue NIH over Trump administration's new 15% cap on overhead for federal research grants. Suit filed federal court in Boston contends lifesaving research 'will grind to a halt' under the policy. Doc: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

I'm a researcher funded by NSF. The indirect funds that are being slashed to 15% at NIH, and probably NSF soon, are not some kind of markup or profit. These pay for essential things like rent for a building to work in, lab space, salaries of people who manage benefits for the organization... 1/

Pleased to have worked with a great team of authors on Fricker et al. "Antarctica in 2025: Drivers of deep uncertainty in projected ice loss". www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Spot on from @chrismurphyct.bsky.social

A new iceberg, ~30x14 km in size, recently calved from the southern end of the George VI Ice Shelf. It's called A84 and is already making quite an impact, bumping into the Stange Ice Shelf over the weekend! These Copernicus Sentinel-1 images from Polar View show the new berg over the last few days.

Another new paper this week, on #Antarctic coastal polynyas and their importance for Earth's #climate. With declining sea ice, these important features will lose their ability to create dense shelf water - essential for global ocean circulation. www.nature.com/articles/s43...
