🧵 The House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee has published its report on its inquiry into "The UK and the Antarctic Environment". committees.parliament.uk/committee/62...

Another fantastic, critical scientific service gone. PGC has changed how we think about Antarctica, which is a critical part of the global water system and key ecosystems, regardless of your "belief" in human-caused climate change.

The increasingly broad application of the phrase "tipping point" can conceal the complexity of processes that can drive rapid change in the climate. "Climate change will surprise us, but so-called 'tipping points' may lead us astray," by @bobkopp.net, @lisgilmore.bsky.social, and Rachael Shwom.

This is almost unbelievable. It's now May and there is still virtually no new sea ice forming in the Bellingshausen Sea (lower left region in image). Image showing sea ice concentration derived from AMSR satellite data is by Institute of Environmental Physics, University of Bremen, Germany.

A reminder that NSF is explicitly breaking the law if/when they attempt to cancel grants that focus on promoting participation in science by underrepresented groups on that basis, incl women in science programs like NSF ADVANCE. Congress expressly directs the NSF to grant funds for this purpose. 🧪

🚨 Breaking: The NSF director just announced how the agency and DOGE intends to terminate active grants: "Research projects with more narrow impact limited to subgroups of people based on protected class or characteristics do not effectuate NSF priorities." www.nsf.gov/updates-on-p...

If I wasn't so close to retirement ...

This may be the most disgusting statement in this entire case. I'm teetering on violating my own ban on swearing on social media

Bondi grotesquely claims that Abrego Garcia's wife and child are better off with him gone

Holy shit. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has halted the awarding of previously approved proposals to ensure compliance with presidential directives following the arrival of DOGE at the science funding agency.

US students. Looking to apply to graduate school? Had an offer rescinded recently? The University of British Columbia in Canada will re-open the application portal in some departments for US students from April 14-18. Details: www.grad.ubc.ca/us-applicant... #ubc #AcademicSky #PhDSky #ScienceSky

Read Jeremy's thread on NOAA and NASA cuts!

White House budget request is to cut Earth Science by 50%; potentially requiring total closure of Goddard? Long way to go in the budget process, but anything like this is catastrophic

*Billionaire* says that peasants shouldn't contact SSA if their social security payment goes missing one month. "Only fraudsters do that." "Good" news? Soc Sec has more fans than does science

I use ICESat-2 data for understanding the processes by which polar sea ice and ice shelves interact with the ocean. We have more than 6 years of fantastic data, a tribute to the engineers and others who designed, built and maintain it.

It's up to us to make sure this was not for nothing.

Bedmap3 is now out rdcu.be/ecTmO

My latest essay is up. “Selma is Stronger than MAGA: On Loving Your Country.” Inspired by the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday…and, ironically Justice Kennedy. READ AND SHARE. open.substack.com/pub/sherrily...

I don't post much. This was intended to be where I share cool polar science, and photos of birds and the natural beauty of Oregon. However ... I'm also a climate scientist, and now a beneficiary of cancer research. Attacks on climate research and NIH health research are appalling.

America’s advantage in science made us rich, and kept us powerful. It’s why we have the most innovative companies, the most successful tech sector and the mightiest military. Why is Trump trying to slaughter the golden goose? wapo.st/41iUzAW

Hear Dr @taimoorsohail.bsky.social discuss this important work on Australia's ABC Radio National. So good for people across our nation to hear about this finding and the risks associated - nice job Taimoor! 🌊 www.abc.net.au/listen/progr...

Per senior USAID official, Trump Adm actions likely to cause * up to 18m additional cases of malaria; 166k additional deaths * 200k children paralyzed with polio * 1m children not treated for malnutrition * 28k new cases of infectious disease www.nytimes.com/2025/03/02/h...

This is Marco Rubio explaining how the USA promised to defend Ukraine forever if they got rid of their nuclear arsenal left after the Soviet Union fell. This is why lil marco was sinking into the couch. He was hoping we wouldn’t find it…so don’t RT right now this very second.
