This feels like a sort of carnival-week funeral for the US republic. Beneath deep anger at Trump's orgy of vandalism and self-worship, I feel deep sadness. What a train wreck of a superpower.

1. The Trump administration has crippled cancer and Alzheimer's research by imposing a freeze on all government credit cards at NIH. An NIH source with direct knowledge tell Popular Information that scientific research has ground to halt because necessary supplies can no longer be purchased.

SCOOP: The world is likely to see millions more malaria infections and 200,000 cases of paralytic polio each year, according to a whistle-blower from USAID. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/02/h...

Has there ever been a year when so many film icons have died? The in memoriam was just overwhelming.

Did Putin write this?

Ominously plausible warnings from @filipecampante.bsky.social of what our descent into competitive authoritarianism could look like

Something odd here. CBS News confirms other media reports: "Hegseth has issued a directive to U.S. Cyber Command to pause planning against Russia, including offensive digital actions." The CBS News then notes that National Security Advisor Michael Waltz said he's unaware of the directive.

I just realized that Isabella Rossellini is wearing blue velvet in honor of David Lynch & immediately started to cry.

That was funny

If you work at the Washington Post, now is the time to resign. You’re a part of this now.

you'd think Marco and Elon would be proud of how many people they're condemning to needless death. Elon bragged about how he put the agency "into the wood chipper". why so bashful now?

This is a loudly blown whistle.

There it is. The opening salvo is cooking the national books. They've tipped the whole economy into recession. So this their angle. And as long as we're talking about Dept of Commerce, when do we starting hearing about those cash on the barrel deals for pardons and well everything?

This is the second time USAID/State is punishing people revealing the truth that Marco is killing children. They're quite desperate to hide this fact, as if the reporters in Africa or court declarations are making it up.

"Embarrassing" isn't a strong enough word for this level of cravenness.

Looks like @propublica.org has confirmed the identities of over 30 DOGE-cel staffers. Always remember: nothing stays a secret forever. www.propublica.org/article/elon...

On the heels of multiple airplane disasters, including one less than a month ago that killed 67 people, and after years of warnings about our understaffed air traffic control system, Trump has begun firing hundreds of FAA air traffic control workers. apnews.com/article/doge...

$500 million worth of food intended for relief efforts is at risk of spoiling, given Trump’s freeze on shipping food assistance “They get the one starving kid in Sudan that isn’t going to have a USAID bottle, and they make everything DOGE has done about the starving kid in Sudan,” WH official said.

Trumpist fascism is a movement led by very well-educated urban elites who want people to believe they champion rural people. Don’t fall for that phony divide. They attack rural folks, too. Here’s one small example local to Vermont:

A leading DOGE wrecker — Kliger is right at the top — declaring he was converted to the cause by Ron Unz, an open white supremacist who says Jews drink non-Jewish blood.

This is where we are now: An elementary school at Fort Campbell has removed all books from its library that so much as *allude* to slavery or the civil rights movement. The wholesale erasure of history in real time.

They’re absolutely going for it. Doesn’t mean they’re going to be successful, and in fact I think it’s like shooting the moon, but everyone needs to understand what they are attempting.

I'm hearing a lot from the media NGO sector about the impact of USAID cuts. A lot of small investigative media organisations across the globe are facing imminent closure as the funding they've budget for has vanished overnight, and the funder community has no capacity to absorb the shock.

The big bad bionic boy has been here, baby!

This is evil. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/06/h...

new head of public diplomacy for US state dept cheered Jan 6 insurrection in real time, in addition to history of white nationalist agitation

Conservative budget wonks (Manhattan Instiutte, Tax Foundation) confirming that this is a consittutional crisis. Not liberal hysteria. Happening right now.

A coup is when unelected persons or parties seize control of the government and govern through unconstitutional means. Musk is trying to do that with the acquiescence of an elected president. Not quite an auto-coup. More like an on-the-side coup.

FACT CHECK: Canada has already announced this plan BEFORE Trump announced his tariffs.

No, the headline is "Trump attacks minorities to cover up his own culpability in crash", it's time to start playing the game we are actually in

This is Authoritarian 101 basic stuff: Start a witchhunt into media platforms that aren’t promoting your agenda. Meta caved in. PBS didn’t. So PBS gets the McCarthy treatment.

He's not blaming DEI, he's blaming women and non white people.

Crank up the curb theme song

"Tillis personally assured Danielle Hegseth in a call on Jan. 19 that if she signed [her sworn] statement...it would carry weight & potentially move 3 votes—his own, along with Collins & Murkowski...Tillis [was] the 50th senator to vote 'yes' on Hegseth" www.wsj.com/politics/pol...

This is the ethos of project 2025, dismantling the federal government by any means necessary

Breaking News: President Trump fired 17 inspectors general in a late-night purge of the internal government watchdogs, people with knowledge of the move said.

Shit like this is gonna be catnip for the mainstream media for as long as this doomed relationship lasts. Psychodrama among real psychos. It’ll be like I, Claudius for morons:

The Washington Post editorial this morning essentially equating Biden's questionable pardons with Trump's outrageous Jan. 6 pardons was unconscionable. The newspaper I've been part of for 48 years has utterly lost its soul.

This matters. Not because I think Trump is capable of mercy or empathy towards these vulnerable groups. But because it is a public act of defiance. Contrast that with all these other powerful people in this country signaling nothing but appeasement and obedience.
