I’ve come to realize that the trauma they experienced in their home countries may have been so profound that it’s all they know, and perhaps it’s all they feel capable of handling. Hope and courage might feel so unfamiliar and overwhelming that they struggle to believe in them.

Remember that the same people who decided that we were unequal, also decided that we should raise their children, build their homes, and reap their crops. They are aware that we are competent. And since emancipation, these rich men have relied on poor racist, white people to keep the system going.
