Writing so many tree puns in this week's newsletter prepare yourselves

Ah, the do I have a cold, or is it allergies? Season is here

I have some new followers! If you aren't signed up yet, I write a weekly newsletter each Weds for @thediscourse.ca. It normally has my story of the week & other Comox Valley stuff worth noting. Sometimes I share personal thoughts at the beginning. 🌱 You can sign up at thediscourse.ca/comox-valley...

Our local farmers' market is up for a bunch of awards this year. Check out my latest story for @thediscourse.ca

All our sailings to Mars have been cancelled. Mars sucks – it ain’t the kind of place to raise your kids. In fact, it’s cold as hell.

I rewatched the Matrix this weekend. Hits a little different these days. 🫠

A pair of photos showing the good and not good aspects of deep powder skiing. The 1st is from Sunday at Mt Cain, in bounds. The 2nd is from Monday, showing the Size 2 avalanche in the out of bounds area west of Mt Cain. (Namgis First Nation, northern Vancouver Island, British Columbia Canada)

Enjoyed writing this. I think about this stuff often based on past experiences being near wildfires. We also got into a discussion about ways to take care of yourself while reporting/documenting topics such as wildfires or natural disasters, which can sometimes feel impossible but is so important.

“The film, named Incandescence, is a co-production with the National Film Board of Canada and was filmed on the traditional, unceded land of the Syilx Okanagan People. It will show at the Sid Williams Theatre in Courtenay…” thediscourse.ca/comox-valley... via @thediscourse.ca #BCWildfire

This is my favorite picture of Stonewall. They knew they were getting arrested just for being LGBTQ+. Yet... they're still here, standing outside of the boarded up Stonewall Inn, smiling as the world was at a fever pitch of hatred against them. I think about it a lot in moments like this.

Is it normal for your heart to pound before you make a phone call or nah (help why am I a journalist)

My latest story for The Discourse

The Discourse Comox Valley reporter @madelined.bsky.social recently spoke with Shannon and Mike Farrell, owners of Shamrock Farm, who have been making creative use of their 20-acre farm since 1993. thediscourse.ca/comox-valley...

For my latest shipbreaking story for @thediscoursedotca.bsky.social, myself and @micksweetman.bsky.social went for a tour of the site. It was the first time The Discourse was offered a visit, despite our reporting on Union Bay shipbreaking since October 2023. thediscourse.ca/comox-valley...

Since last October, I've been wading into the complex world of shipbreaking and calls for better regulation in British Columbia. If you want to check out all of my shipbreaking coverage, go to thediscourse.ca/deep-dive/sh...

3/3 And the third article took a look at the city's floodplain, and explored how the city is managing future flood events. It also has some links that may be helpful if you live in the area and want to see if your place of residence or work is in the floodplain. thediscourse.ca/comox-valley...

2/3 The second story for the Courtenay River series looked into how the city was built alongside the river, and what happens when a community tries to control and contain a river. thediscourse.ca/comox-valley...

1/3 I recently wrote a story that ended up expanding into a three-part series on the Courtenay River. The series began with looking into why a set of Courtenay apartments along the river were being demolished. @thediscoursedotca.bsky.social thediscourse.ca/comox-valley...

Morning, everyone

I'm liking the design of Bluesky so far. The algorithm has figured out that I like nerdy anime fan art, and now I'm wondering if I should keep this account professional or just go rogue since I have a total of three followers.
