Oh God I’m behind on grading again; sometimes writer, failed gardener, mom. Dogs, kids, books, and US politics. In rural NC but not from here. She/her.

I heard the NEA is only considering proposals related to 1776 & the USA’s 250th birthday & I was feeling intensely patriotic, so I’m printing these really big posters inspired *directly* by the Founding Fathers The cut was carved from the masthead of a 19th century newspaper

Posting my embroidery so people can find me... 🐯 #embroidery #handembroidery

I’m getting ready for a regular school day but still on a rush of endorphins after FINALLY completing the Iron Throne prison break in Baldur’s Gate 3 with zero casualties. (It took me like 4 days). It was 2 days ago and I’m still screaming “Everybody Lives!” Like the Eccleston Doctor in Series 1.

You might be thinking, "Ah, pages from a translation of Physiologus, a Greek bestiary. Written around 1200, maybe," and you would be right. But the Westfjordian* person who owned this folio around 1700 didn't think that. They thought, "What a nice sieve for my flour and rye." *Possibly not a word.

I've been writing a series of essays for PBS on men whose style I admire. The latest is about James Baldwin, a man who knew how to sing through clothes. www.pbs.org/wnet/america...

OK, this is amazing- "Gustavo Cañas-Valle, an ornithologist and birding guide, stumbled across a cave full of hummingbirds nesting and roosting together in Ecuador’s High Andes." Written by @rachelnuwer.bsky.social #birds #nature 🌿🪶🦉🧪

Ducky is the barista of the Famous Weird Coffee Shop and the world needs him.

I really hate the "put up with the grime, it's a city" mindset, but I hate this sort of declinism more. A country that gives up on public transit bc it's scary, and crams more people into cars, is a failure.

A good thing to do if you are flailing a bit right now (as who is not??) is to get in touch with your own values, the things that you find life affirming and necessary in the world. Read some inspiring works about things you value - labor solidarity, scientific achievement, social justice.

One of the people who runs the shower side of the shower pop up my free clothes closet is at, Deeq, needs dental help. He is genuinely one of the best souls I know. He runs the kids' programming, does Somali translation, organizes the food shelf... And he needs community right now. 💕💸

Dear teachers: If you need to take a day off to stare into the abyss, scroll TikTok, and/or eat Thin Mints for 8 hour straight so you don't lose your mind or cool: Do it. And don't let anybody make you feel bad about it. Nobody wants your job. 💛

I understand why these stories exist but it’s important to be clear that he’s not “saving” 16 billion, he’s choosing, personally, without oversight, to wipe out 16 billion dollars of government services to veterans and the disabled and food safety etc etc

Go ahead. Let the people see you for what you are.

Maybe you need some fresh spices? Maybe you don't, but you will..... Penzey's is the place to go. It's worth getting on their mailing list just for their inspirational newsletters. www.penzeys.com

“The Maryland National Guard must decline events which celebrates individuals based all or in part on immutable characteristics,” the memo said. Douglass was an abolitionist, suffragist, orator and author. That’s what we celebrate him. Let’s be clear: This bars celebrating him because he was Black.

You might have missed it, but Amazon warehouse workers in Raleigh, NC are voting this week on whether to form a union. If they win, they'll be the first unionized Amazon facility in the South. Remember that we can always find hope in the labor movement.

Sometimes I think about how MY LADY JANE is also a TV show now and I'm just . . . that is so wild. Seems fake. But is real.

Thank you to everyone who has donated to this! Stage One of the renovation (making the Abandoned Ladder Corner into a Library Nook) was completed today, and we hope to have the second half (creating a comfy seating and craft area) done by the end of the month. Here's a little before and after:

This is where you go to tell the National Park Service to restore the word "transgender" in its entry on the Stonewall monument. (Scroll down.)

no the fuck we are NOT making “LGBQ+” a thing and if I see any of you motherfuckers using that acronym it’s on sight Marsha P. Johnson did not smash in the windshield of a police car for this

Trans activists like Marsha P. Johnson and Silvia Rivera played crucial roles in the Stonewall uprising. This is insulting on several levels. www.reuters.com/graphics/USA...

So we are going to have an accountability meeting because after 7 (SEVEN!) class days, my students’ ELA diagnostic scores have not gone up (the only acceptable direction). Actually, on average, their scores dropped 2 points because we spent most of that time on skills not measured by the diagnostic.

No they're not. They know exactly what they're voting for: The continued dismantling of our public health system. That's what they want. You know this. Why do we have to do this playacting goldfish brain shit every time.

How much Elon Musk makes from the government a day: $8 million. How much a senior on Social Security gets a day: $65 Guess which budget Musk and Trump want to cut?

extremely glad to see media coverage of this because it is monumentally fucked up

Woohoo! "In response to doctors' lawsuit, Judge John Bates, a George W. Bush appointee, orders CDC, NIH, and FDA to put back up websites and datasets". Now let's see if they listen. #medsky #academicsky #standupforscience

My students are brilliant & we do hard things, and at least one person in each class said something like “I KNEW she was gonna make us analyze it.” One girl said she started taking notes last night because she knew we were about to “make a whole think piece” in class 😂

Hey Dems in Congress— break down the fucking doors

Got up at 6, worked all day. Getting ready for bed now at about 10 pm, and still haven’t had a chance to “put my feet up” as my grandpa used to say. I love teaching. I love my students. I love being a mom. Some days it feels real hard to believe it’s possible to do both things well.
