Why couldn’t Cap4Real have been a bit Manchurian Candidate meets Godfather, Part 2? Play Isaiah as a legit presidential assassin in the front story, then flashback to his origins and show why he might have a legitimate grudge against an American commander in chief. And Sam is caught in the middle.

Especially as a counterpoint to Sam Wilson’s own ambivalence towards the government. But Isaiah remains on the periphery, almost as an avatar of atrocities rather than as a full character with his own complete story. We get sketches of him, when we deserve all of him.

True, for the most part, TNG’s conflicts are externally motivated. Side effect of it being, basically, a naval procedural: There’d always be the scene in the officer’s conference room where they’d disagree on the course of action, Picard would make his decision, and everyone would fall in line.

Syd Field’s “Screenplay” was the first book I read that explained the form. It’s a pretty dogmatic book, though — i’d ignore most of its advice. Instead, just read a buncha scripts to see how the masters do it.

Anansi Boys is about two brothers, twins. One is meek, timid, like a flopsy, set-upon puppy. The other brother is narcissistic, hedonistic, governed by nothing other than his own pursuit of sensation and pleasure. They seem so different, but they are very much flip sides of the same coin. Literally.
