I have read that the mycelia of lichens open fisures in rocks helping to decompose them and begin the creation of soils.. Doing the work of making our planet habitable for 750 million years.. is that what I am seeing here?

yes! so true.. I started painting images of lichens because I was thrilled by the splash of color they bring to so many types of landscapes. the color of lichen is essentially caused by the photobiont that occupies the fungal matrix. As you likely know lichens are a symbiotic relationship.
