Last night I had a new student taking a trial class, and afterwards she complimented me on “how you made those guys talk about their feelings.”

8. I have exactly one tattoo. It’s of the Southern Cross constellation, which was the name of my dad’s beloved fishing boat, named for the Crosby, Stills, & Nash song (by way of Jimmy Buffett). Growing up near the equator, I saw those stars every single night.

7. There’s no photographic evidence of this, but Kevin Hart once told me to my face that I wasn’t white. (DNA testing later disproved this theory)

6. I reread the entirety of the Middle-Earth novels every year, doing one chapter a day starting in July with the Silmarillion then continuing into The Children of Hurin, The Hobbit, and LotR (beginning A Long-Expected Party on Sep. 22). I’ve done this for twelve years now.

This is a really great exercise!! I’ve been thinking about tackling some short story prompts to see if that breaks me out of my rut, but it may be even more useful to do something even smaller scale to get the creativity flowing again.

Good advice!! Sprints have been really helpful for me in the past. Hopefully doing a few will help me regain my focus and drive.

Yeah, I’ve spent a lot of time walking my neighborhood trying to give my brain a reset, but it does tend to bump up against my inner voice telling me I need to be productive *right now* 😅 But at least there are a lot of neighborhood cats to pet 😸
