I talked about real scientific projects today. It made me feel so much better! I’m hoping next week I’ll get to open up R and actually work on a project.

For more state jobs in California, check out calcareers.ca.gov. There are LOTS of departments that hire scientists. And for now we are more stable than federal service.

I'm seeing a lot of support for fired scientists and environmental professionals, which is great But a lot is phased is "just keep doing your important work," and I need you to know that these are early career people with student loans and no savings, and they need income for food and shelter.

With so much going on, if you've been able to get anything done -- answer emails, analyze data, produce figures, participate in meetings, write reports, review papers, give lectures, grade assignments, mentor others -- I'm sending you kudos. Because that deserves applause in these turbulent times.

I went to a crowd-sourced art show with a few people in a park today. Seriously, though, the sign game was strong in Sacramento this afternoon. And there were so many people!

In 2015, I stopped using MATLAB because basic functions like **averaging** were locked behind a license I no longer had. Imagine opening weather.gov and being blocked by a paywall before you saw the current temperature or tomorrow's forecast. Or having to watch an ad every time.

To probationary federal employees who have been terminated: Democracy Forward has filed a first-of-its-kind class-wide complaint with the Office of Special Counsel. If civil servants want to join in the complaint, you can email [email protected]

This article has an interactive map where you can find out how much of the workforce in your congressional district is made up of federal employees. That’s neat. I bet you can think of two or three specific people who need to be reminded of these stats.

I’m gutted. OPM fired about 25% of my office today. I can’t even describe what I witnessed today. So much cruelty from above, but so much love and support inside the office. It makes no sense. We aren’t even paid out of appropriations funds. We work on “soft money” reimbursable agreements.

Hi, @padilla.senate.gov. Your voicemail is full at your Sacramento office and your Washington office isn’t taking calls or voicemails. I would love to share some thoughts with you.

Scientists, it’s been a rough week. And honestly, we don’t lift each other up enough—especially when it comes to mental health. Our careers are built on repetitive rejection of papers, grants, and jobs. That doesn’t define you. You and your science are incredible. Just wanted to remind you of that.

I was on a zoom call for a training session today where everyone who was at home spontaneously decided to hold their dog up for everyone to see. It was lovely. Here’s my dog.

Thanks to all the new followers and I am honored and enter the #AltGov group with resolve. Our employees are some of the most committed people I have ever met. They care about wildlife, manage ecosystems to protect people, provide opportunities for hunting and fishing, and fund state programs.

This helped me feel grounded this morning as I head into another work week. Take cate of yourself and take care of each other.

I told someone this today. Maybe you need to hear it, too. I’m glad you’re here. You showed up today, and in this climate that’s an accomplishment. Do the best you can today and if that’s not the same as your best from three weeks ago, that’s completely understandable. 👩‍🔬🌎🧪

That forking email might have turned the tide on my mood. I was sad and anxious but now I’m pissed off. LFG.

Okay, I couldn't wait. It's wigs. I bought little wigs for the goats.

Penzey sort of gets that his favorite person is stressed right now. If someone would please remove his sock, he’ll gladly just lick his toes until they’re better so they don’t have to worry about treatment.

My anxiety has reached the stage where I have to remind myself to eat and that when I eat it can’t just be carbs.

We're having a discussion about which interesting animal behaviour would be terrifying on a different species. The rules are a) it can't be an immediate danger to you b) it has to be so scary you would stop filming and leave. Feel free to play along. The current winner is vulture murmuration.

I woke up early, as I have lately, and this time, it was “it’s a marathon, not a sprint” was nagging at me. I'm sick to death of hearing it, but it's also good advice? I hate that. Anyway. I am neither a gifted natural athlete nor a professional runner. I know nothing about winning marathons, but

Atcha reminds us that it’s ok to be pissed off (or to just look pissed off) while you’re resting.

Ever wonder what snow in the swamp would look like? This is 5 miles into the Louisiana swamps in the Atchafalaya basin... it's unreal... having lived down there for the first 28 years of my life, we never saw anything like this. Smashed records. Curtesy of Garrett Roberts.

If you don’t already have a place where you stash nice emails to reread on a rough day, I highly recommend starting one. If you already have one, today is a great day to go look at it. My folder is called “Rainbows & Unicorns” just because that also makes me happy.

I am just looking around today, feeling overwhelmed by the number of extraordinary people I know who have been working very hard for a very long time towards making this flying rock safer and more free for more people. I know these times are scary. They are. But we're not alone. You are not alone.

This essay is one of my favorites. It’s about the ecosystem functions of San Francisco Estuary’s freshwater flows and values we place on them. It sums everything up with “wasted water to some is essential water to others.” #cawater escholarship.org/content/qt2d...

Today my husband and I went to MOSAC, the Museum of Science and Curiosity, in Sacramento. I bought a little dinosaur friend in the gift shop. The planetarium show about the universe was great. We’re members so I can’t wait to go back and see the other shows.

Remember to keep your eyes on the prize: the future world you want to build Don’t drown thinking only of the things you are against Remember to dream of and work to create what you’re for

On Caturday we do whatever we want (like sit on stuff we found on the kitchen table), just like every other day.
