Trump is miscalculating. Before Putin, Russia was emerging from a totalitarian regime. It is less difficult to return to a sham democracy and revert to the normal practice of throwing opponents off skyscrapers than to take a stable democracy and enforce violent oppression.

I've been serialising my 2018 novel "Ruling Classes" on Substack. It's a great platform and has injected further interest in this story of an internicine small-town war between an eminent private school and its state school neighbour. It's still available in print and on Kindle.

Banning of specific books in some US states exemplifies the politics of ignorance. It is reminiscent of the Brexit vote in the UK when persuaded we'd "had enough of experts." I have, rather stupidly, engaged in debate on social media, and more publicly, with Reform acolytes. I have concluded that, of all political parties, they most loathe and despise the Greens. It's pathological. No argument deters them. It's deep hatred. Anyone else noticed this?
