My understanding is that it's mostly personal. I interviewed Jagmeet Singh in the last election when he was at the peak of his popularity, but there's been an orchestrated backlash against him since, from right-wing media but also many progressives who see him as tactless.

More importantly, as always, SPD is NOT the main supplier of new AfD voters.
Most new AfD voters did not vote in 2021 (not only first voters!).
Right-wing parties CDU and FDP were main suppliers.
Despite hype, BSW took virtually nothing from AfD.

Also, the AfD is NOT the party of the youth.
The (new) Left did significantly better than AfD among 18-24 year olds.
Die Linke is also NOT the left-wing equivalent of AfD. They are more old-school social democratic than communist. Even their "populism" is debatable.
