There would appear to be no legal consequences for the mother, or any lay supporters, however late the termination was, but any medical practitioners exceeding the provisions of the Abortion Act could be subject to regulatory sanction.

Strange that so many of those now vociferously promoting Connolly’s cause were silent for the first 7 months of her sentence, and are still silent about the Kay case (longer sentence handed down 2 months before hers).

No, it really hasn’t, and the judge was at pains to make that clear in his sentencing remarks.

I would like to hear what steps Badenoch, Jenrick and Braverman took while in Government to repeal Thatcher’s apparently oppressive law.

Those inclined to diminish Connolly’s actions might like to consider the sentencing remarks in the Tyler Kay case. His tweets quoted hers but went even further. He did offer a basis of plea and had it rejected, receiving a 38 month sentence after a 20% discount.

Accepting Vance’s mischaracterization of the abortion protestors was I think a mistake. Tossici-Bolt was convicted of breaching a Public Spaces Protection Order for which she received conditional discharges. She wasn’t fined – she was ordered to contribute £20,000 towards the Council’s costs.

I wonder how close is the correlation between the rents charged to MP expenses and local commercial rents.

I think that there has been too little focus upon the respective duties and limitations of mayors and councils – it is crying out for a good infographic - even some of those elected seem to be having difficulties.

This piece explains the court ruling in full. It's long. But by the end, you'll understand the judgement, the legal repercussions, the political attack, and what will happen next iandunt.substack.com/p/everything...

I can understand why someone would vote for a mayoral candidate with a track record of delivering services locally, but am lost to understand why they would for someone parachuted into an area on the basis of their notoriety.

Other commentators and lawyers hold a different view. The point that I was making is that if the Supreme Court has misapprehended Parliament’s intention then Parliament has the capacity to remedy the situation.

I haven’t read the debates so don’t know how much opposition there was at the time.

The Supreme Court didn’t have a freehand; its role wasn’t to make the law but to interpret Parliament’s intention. The absence of widespread criticism from that source suggests that they have got that right. If people disagree with the judgment their ire should be directed at Parliament.

Also need to be aware that in malevolent hands the extra-territorial reach of the Office of Foreign Assets Control can have a chilling effect in other jurisdictions on the lawful activities of subsidiaries of U.S. parent companies.
