Your MAGA-run government is more concerned about ‘decorum’ than they are people losing access to Medicaid and Social Security and the demise of our democracy. And it’s always the Black and brown folks who are silenced and punished for speaking truth to power.

This is a 5-alarm fire for the environment - and our health. It’s handing polluters the keys to the kingdom.

NEW: While all eyes are on Trump and DOGE, a bill recently introduced in both the House and Senate would cripple the EPA's ability to regulate. It's a very serious threat and experts told me it could pass www.propublica.org/article/legi...

I mean, it’s not great that only 5 of 9 Supreme Court justices believe in the Constitution, but a win is a win.

Via “One First,” my (very quick) attempt to untangle this morning’s 5-4 #SCOTUS ruling in the foreign aid funding cases—and what it means going forward both for foreign aid funding and for the broader Trump litigation universe: www.stevevladeck.com/p/129-untang...

the only member who brought the energy we asked for indignant defiance for everyone to see imagery is powerful and this says everything a Black man raising his cane in defiance of those who betray our ppl. Surrounded by seated white people who watched him be thrown out and did nothing

BREAKING: Supreme Court DENIES President Trump‘s emergency bid to cancel nearly $2 billion in USAID spending. The vote is 5-4.

This is both immoral and a method for creating terrorists.

WTAF?!? We are well past the "Are we the baddies?" stage.

This is not law. It couldn’t withstand legal scrutiny. Don’t comply in advance university presidents. General counsel, don’t panic. Do law, not vibes.

Democracy dies in darkness - literally this time

BREAKING: Federal judge finds that Trump's effort to fire Cathy Harris as a member of the Merit Systems Protection Board was illegal, issues a declaratory judgment that she remains in office and a permanent injunction against her removal unless Trump follows the removal provisions.

everything is so shitty, read this story about a genuinely good man who saw he had an opportunity to save millions of lives and threw himself into doing so. the world is full of heroes like him.

Wondering about the legality of DJT's EOs purporting to read Title IX to *require* a variety of anti-trans measures? I have updated my forthcoming Article to address: ssrn.com/abstract=494... Topline summary: the text of TIX neither authorizes nor permits such mandatory anti-trans measures.

This is so unconstitutional it’s like a law school issue spotter. Spending clause fail. Separation of powers fail. First Amendment fail. Vagueness fail.

Not for nothing but once again HE HAS NO LEGAL OR CONSTITUTIONAL ABILITY TO DO THIS

This is unconstitutional. A violation of the First Amendment. A violation of federalism and the separation of powers. It’s unconstitutionally vague. It’s unlawful. It’s unlawful. It’s unlawful.

It's economically destructive and geopolitical insanity and bad for the United States in every possible way, but more than that, torching our relationships with our closest friends and literal neighbors in Canada and Mexico is a profoundly immoral thing to do, and should be denounced as such.

The denial and destruction of basic needs — water, food, homes, hospitals — is state violence. Palestinians deserve to live free from siege. That means pushing back on the U.S. government which backs this apartheid. Give: gazafunds.com and linktr.ee/thesameerproject Act: uscpr.org/take-action/

"tree equity" is the kind of thing that columnists like to make fun of when why it works is actually instantly apparent to anyone who's ever walked down a street in the summer apnews.com/article/tree...

BREAKING: Judge Amy Berman Jackson sides with Hampton Dellinger in his challenge to Donald Trump’s effort to fire him as head of the Office of Special Counsel. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

We were delighted to host our first "Ask me anything" on Thursday. Below, we are summarizing some themes that came up. We have such great followers and will host another in the future!

I’ve seen some bristle at efforts to unearth these stories, and at the people doing the unearthing, but that is wrong. None of this should be tolerated.

A lot of people are going to die from this

The day we lost who we are in the world.

"Trump and Vance crossed a giant moral Rubicon today. They showed the entire world the full fetid awfulness of their vision" -- my colleague @sashaabramsky.bsky.social on Trump's disgraceful behavior at the White House yesterday www.thenation.com/article/poli...

Thank you to Gov Shapiro for standing up for freedom & lower-case "d" democratic values - core tenets of what the US has embraced throughout its history. Thank you for standing with the people of Ukraine & with Ukrainian-Americans, whose lives have been destroyed by Vladimir Putin.

No one should be above the law - certainly not the life-tenured federal judges who interpret the law.

If you defend oppression, you can no longer be a beacon for freedom.

This is the most telling photo I’ve seen — Trump/Vance berating a wartime leader fighting against invasion directly in front of a bust of Churchill. It looks like Churchill is seated in the back, watching Trump kill the very US-Europe alliance that Churchill helped forge. THREAD

America has switched sides. therecord.media/hegseth-orde...

In this instance, standing up against and defying the United States of America is the morally, geopolitically, and strategically right decision.

America had a king once. But almost 250 years ago, here in Philadelphia, we freed our nation from a monarch’s tyranny and fought for the modern world’s first government for the people by the people. (1/2)

No words suffice. Slava Ukraini 🇺🇦

New, from @pamherd.bsky.social & I: Trump said "Social Security would not be touched." Now the Trump admin proposes a 50% cut in Social Security employees. This will absolutely gut SSA's ability to serve everyone who depends on the program - which is everyone. 🧵 open.substack.com/pub/donmoyni...

The obvious point here is that when Dems hold positions of power they don't actually force people to say things like "pregnant people." Some people were asked to used their pro-nouns once on a zoom call and mistook it for oppression.

This is also why I think it is a mistake for universities and corporations to simply re-brand DEI policies. They need to defend the underlying principles (integration is good, diversity makes us better) rather than trying to outrun a fascist assault that will be trained on the re-brand

The attack on DEI shows why liberals should stop arguing about "strategic" use of language forever. DEI stands for three uncontroversial virtues that most every American accepts, and the right still turned it into a vile slur. It doesn't matter what you say - they will poison it because YOU said it.

JUDGE ALSUP: “.. The Office of Personnel Management does not have any authority whatsoever under any statute in the history of the universe, to hire and fire employees within another agency.” @nbcnews.com #OPM

gotta love judge alsup

Name every victory when they come

The issue—that most lawyers will not mention because they are trained to be deferential to courts—is that this is uncomplicated as a legal matter. Congress authorized the spending. There is nothing to sort out. Roberts is delaying to clean up the politics of his majority making Trump a king.

A story about how seeds planted 30 years ago bear fruit. From 1997-1999, I had a truly remarkable teacher. His name was Robert Carney. 1/

"Moderate" Republicans swore they wouldn't cut Medicaid yet last night they punked out as soon as Trump called. Last week, the Senate did the same Over 3M in PA rely on Medicaid + CHIP for healthcare I wonder if our Senator McCormick will keep serving Trump or start serving the people of his state

An unvaccinated child died from measles during an outbreak in West Texas. This was completely preventable. The laws of biology and chemistry don’t care about your ideology, your party or what your cousin’s friend said on social media. Ignore science and bad things happen.

On my district (PA-03): "In PA-03, the 247,552 people on Medicaid are at risk of losing their health care under Republican budget plans. This includes 104,776 children under the age of 19 and 29,000 seniors over 65 in PA-03."
