"Early American history is full of examples of bilingual government, experts said. In the 19th century, Midwestern states translated laws and messages from their governors into Norwegian, German and Welsh." www.nytimes.com/2025/03/03/u...

I'm hitting the road on a #book tour for Seascape which is published on March 13th by Calon Books. The first stops are Mold, Chepstow, Swansea and then a hometown gig in Cardiff. After that, I head further afield and who knows where it will lead... #sea #climatechange www.uwp.co.uk/book/seascape/

Successful second homes crackdown means homes are £30k cheaper for Cymry, who actually need them.

It's impossible to price risk in a burning world, especially one dominated by financial pyromaniacs like Trump and Musk.

I've been flummoxed by the politicisation of climate change and the idea that it is "woke" in some way. This column does a good job of explaining how right wing populism is using climate as a weapon to stoke communities who feel abandoned by what they perceive as "elite" governments.

The Liberal Democrats have announced they will work with Plaid Cymru to push for the devolution of the Crown Estate to Wales ✍️ @emilypricejourno.bsky.social

"That Wales is known as the land of song is increasingly ironic, as its musical life edges ever closer to collapse." Strong words in this week's Private Eye:

Thirty six years ago this week I arrived in New York and lived here. Great but also quite strange to be back!

This is a must read for anyone living close to the sea....and a topic I explore in my new book, Seascape, a #walking journey around the #Welsh coastline. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/03/o...

Europe's governments and banks will struggle to cope with the soaring costs of catastrophes such as floods and wildfires, EU’s top insurance regulator warns “I think it is the biggest risk facing society, frankly,” says Petra Hielkema HT @carbonbrief.org #climatecrisis www.ft.com/content/2844...

The high cost of climate denial: In Key Biscayne, FL, a city of 15,000 people with an annual budget of $97 million, it will cost $300 million to raise roads to keep them from flooding due to rising seas.

Thanks for @markavery.bsky.social for this review of Seascape, published by @calonbooks.bsky.social on March 13th. And yes, it is a nice cover illustration - done by the amazing Neil Gower.

Well this is all starting off well....

The joke once was that you could put a donkey up for election in the Valleys and people would still vote Labour. This column by @willhaycardiff.bsky.social demonstrates how that complacency could see the party make an ass out itself in the next Senedd elections. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I'm in very good company with Seascape being featured by @kerraway.bsky.social in his recommended #travel #books of 2025. Many thanks for the mention. deskboundtraveller.com/words-from-t...

I'm really excited to be speaking with @chepstowbooks.bsky.social on March 18th about my new book, Seascape - Notes from a Changing Coastline. The #book begins in Chepstow so they'll be lots of local stories to tell. Come join me! #Wales #walking chepstowbooks.co.uk/collections/...

Great hearing Dr Sam Willis talk about the 1859 Royal Charter tragedy off the coast of Moelfre in Ynys Mon. The other part of the story was that the London media blamed local people for robbing the bodies of the deceased....and the wreck inspired the creation of the Shipping Forecast.

"One lesson climate change teaches us again and again is that bad things can happen ahead of schedule. Model predictions for climate impacts have tended to be optimistically biased." by @climatehuman.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/2025/01/10/o...

Technology has been shaping, refining and reinventing journalism for more than a century. AI will bring about some of the greatest changes - but editorial judgement and a sense of strong ethics can help make it a useful disruptive force.

Jeff Goodell outlines the domino effect of insurance companies pulling out of climate change impacted areas. It's not just a risk impacting the US. I consider how it will affect Wales and its coast in my new book, Seascape.

All going well so far then....not even sworn in yet.

This is an excellent approach to try and get a big picture view on climate adaptation even if the core research is from 2021. I wonder how rapidly things have changed over the past three years?

Indeed, the storm that sank The Royal Charter off the coast of Ynys Mon spurred on Fitzroy to develop his forecasting system that at first was ridiculed then embraced after his death. I explore it in Seascape, my book about the Welsh coastkine.
