I think about this headline all of the time.

i keep seeing the right argue that the nazi salutes are "trolling." i think there's some truth to that, but know what exactly is being mocked. they aren't mocking the idea that they could be nazis, they're mocking the idea that they should care one way or the other.

Can’t believe the knives are already out in the stores. The Ides of March gets more commercialized every year.

This is most detailed photo ever of an extragalactic object.A 400 megapixel photo of the Andromeda Galaxy. Captured over a period of 3 months using 2 telescopes and thousands of photos. Credit: Andrew McCarthy

This is the actual supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy (Saggitrarius A*), observed by JWST (NIRCam) for over 9 hours. The flickers you see are solar flares on a mind-boggling scale, bright enough to shine across 26,000 light-years of space. webbtelescope.org/contents/new...

The good news is i saved you 60 billion dollars. The bad news is that is a typo i saved you 600 dollars and also your plane is falling out of the sky

real monkey's paw that we invented the ability to hold the sum of all human knowledge in the palm of your hand and then a few years later we're turning it into your stupid friend that pretends to know the answer to every question

Stars are born, light and shadow interweave Deep in the Milky Way, a young star cluster only one or two million years old was quietly born in the dust. Although obscured, the blazing light of the star still penetrates the darkness, showing the evolution and infinite possibilities of the universe. ✨

One of our supporters shared this with us—people are getting creative tonight!

i don’t think we realize just how MASSIVE things in space are

“Something must be done” > “We need to regulate less” > “Something must be done” > “We need to regulate less” > “Something must be done” > “We need to regulate less” > “Something must be done” > “We need to regulate less” > “Something must be done” > “We need to regulate less” and so on…

I've built a machine that can be Confidently Wrong. It can also make pictures that all look a bit the same, as well as make a video of you kissing any celebrity or person you know. In payment, I'd like to boil the world's oceans dry, & steal all literature. For some reason, my head is not on a spike

Me: Oh no that trolley is going to run us over! Guy tied up on the track next to me who somehow thinks he's actually the guy holding the lever: Lol cry more 😂

It is vital that we give big ai trillions of dollars and let them burn through billions of cubic feet of natural gas per day so that students are able to get a passing grade without having to learn anything

Well, America, we had a good run. I mean, mostly. Okay, not entirely. *flips through a history book* You know what, forget I said anything.

Oh come ON now. This new JWST image is just ASTOUNDING. I feel like I’m falling looking into it, and that I would fall forever, and that I would enjoy it. NASA, ESA, CSA, K. McQuinn (STScI), J. DePasquale (STScI)

Still completely surreal to me that Google chose to light its search engine on fire

Angertainment is a great way to describe the emotional experience most social media platforms are optimizing for.

Tony said over on the other site back in 2019 - “Happy 40th to @vizcomic.bsky.social This is one of my proudest moments. I still have a phoney cattery. Ssshhh... “

Today I was asked in an interview about folks who use the weirdness of ✨quantum✨ to hawk pseudoscience junk. I think that kind of grift proliferates because of a big misunderstanding a lot of folks have about quantum mechanics, which is not really their fault! 🧵

i think rage at congestion pricing is a good example of how no one believes that the world can be positive sum anymore. like, people pay a small fee to get access to a faster commute — saving them valuable time — and the money improves public transit, saving other people valuable time. it's win-win!

There are a lot of things that annoy me about that fascist idiot, but one of the little ones is that he keeps saying that “grok” comes from Hitchhiker’s Guide. It comes from Stranger in a Strange Land, and has nothing to do with AI. And the AI robots in Hitchhiker’s Guide? EVERYONE HATES THEM!

Someone shared this with me, and I think it's beautiful. That's what I wish for everyone I love and appreciate in this New Year 2025, that your life is filled with an abundance of real luxuries. ❤️

happy 2025, a square number (45×45) and the sum of the first nine cubes (1³+2³+3³+4³+5³+6³+7³+8³+9³). very cool! very neat!

Recently a friend gave me the most incredible gift I have ever received. Would you like to see it? OF COURSE. Here is the tube map... IN CROSS STITCH. It takes my breath away that anyone could create this, let alone create it for me. She's astonishing.

Some folks are pretty good seeing things coming.

"One of the great tragedies of mankind is that morality has been hijacked by religion. So now people assume that religion and morality have a necessary connection. But the basis of morality is really very simple and doesn't require religion at all." -- Arthur C. Clarke, born #OTD 1917

I urge everyone to read this investigation which describes an evil so mundane and procedural that it reads like bad science fiction www.972mag.com/lavender-ai-...

Reporting from the Syrian revolutionary celebrations in Ummayad Square, Damascus

I wrote a thread about the insurrection in South Korea, which received significant attention. However, with so much news pouring in and the situation changing by the minute, I decided to stop updating that thread. Instead, I am starting new threads on a few specific topics.
