Even though Trump’s advisors are stupid, we need to stop attributing to stupidity what is actually corruption. The purpose of the Yemen Signal group chat was circumvention of public records disclosure laws. They want to act without accountability (which is also why they used disappearing messages).

1) everyone deserves due process, 2) even if that weren’t true, you cannot determine if someone deserves due process without going through due process.

The Office of Long COVID Research and Practice will close as soon as this week, according to an internal HHS email obtained by Inside Medicine. This is the opposite of what you would do if you were genuinely interested in finding treatments for chronic diseases, as RFK claims.

Well, fuck. I was hoping for the best-case scenario but instead it looks like it's the worst.

I feel the need to reup @epopppp.bsky.social's endowments explainer. Endowment funds can't be swapped in for billions of dollars in federal funding of scientific and medical research. It's important to be clear-eyed about that. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/no-univers...

“Food banks across the country are scrambling to make up a $500 million budget shortfall after the Trump administration froze funds for hundreds of shipments of produce, poultry and other items that states had planned to distribute to needy residents.”

AOC: If you are an LGBTQ kid or family, we cannot throw you under the bus in order to win an election. In this house, we stand together

At a packed town hall Democratic Rep. Jim McGovern proposed a general strike to combat the Trump administration's assault on the federal government.

Science functions best when we collaborate and communicate across political borders. Most of our problems don’t care what arbitrary lines we draw on the ground.

TIME has just published a photo essay from the only photojournalist on the scene in El Salvador when the US plane carrying Venezuelan migrants landed. “The intake began with slaps. One young man sobbed when a guard pushed him to the floor. He said, ‘I’m not a gang member. I’m gay. I’m a barber.’”

The wealthiest man in the world has fully purchased the federal government of the United States. This is one of the most extraordinary crises in the history of this country and you need to ask whether your elected representatives are acting like it.

OK, #causalinference #ecology folk - my paper with the even excellent @lauradee.bsky.social on causal inference with observational data is now out in Ecology Letters! 🌍🧪🌊 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

It's clear that the Trump administration denied due process to the migrants it banished to El Salvador *precisely because* any measure of judicial oversight would've proved their innocence immediately. Deported, imprisoned, and condemned to hard labor—for a soccer tattoo. slate.com/news-and-pol...

People are often like "how do you handle having to follow the news for your job" and I basically just tell them I'm a broken husk of a person now

“Masked agents” arrested an Indian national “who was studying and teaching on a student visa,” who “has no criminal record and has not been charged with a crime,” who is married to a U.S citizen, “outside his home in Rosslyn, Virginia.” Now, he appears to be in Louisiana.

Must read: Mahmoud Khalil speaks out for the first time since his arrest by the Trump administration in an exclusive letter, dictated over the phone to his family, from ICE detention in Louisiana.

This man is more afraid of a vaccine than the disease itself, despite what he is proposing is the same concept just worse. I can’t imagine a riskier proposition that could literally crater our food industry. No reason for it, poultry vaccines are in development/being tested now.

From a source: “Just had a co-presenter for a buildings research conference bow out. She’s a dual citizen and the FBI came knocking to ask her about her involvement in coauthoring chunks of the Paris Agreement. Climate science is being literally (and I mean literally) criminalized.”

I had a really fun day at work today

Holy shit. I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say they’re trying to kill us all. “The Environmental Protection Agency plans to eliminate its scientific research arm, firing as many as 1,155 chemists, biologists, toxicologists and other scientists”

Rough day for the it’s-not-a-constitutional-crisis-until-he-defies-a-court-order crowd.

A federal court’s jurisdiction does *not* stop at the water’s edge. The question is whether the *defendants* are subject to the court order, not *where* the conduct being challenged takes place. Were it otherwise, the government could act lawlessly overseas and courts would be powerless to stop it.

Estimated number of people who could die within a year without American foreign aid for: H.I.V. prevention and treatment: 1,650,000 Vaccines: 500,000 Food aid: 550,000 Malaria prevention: 290,000 Tuberculosis prevention: 310,000

One thing everyone should understand is that DOGE has created the least efficient conditions for government I've ever seen. *The working conditions are chaotic. *No clear sense of who works there. *Routine processes have been stopped. *No planning can take place. *People are incredibly demoralized.

This is horrible to post, but I may as well post it. We are essentially shutting down research operations in my group, which is focused on treatments for pediatric brain cancer. I’m a well funded investigator, and there’s no choice. Science can’t function without the stability of NIH

ICE agents are torturing a green card holder from New Hampshire, his mother says www.nhpr.org/nh-news/2025...

I wish this wasn’t so real

ICE raid in NJ nets two kebab shop owners here since 2008, have American children and grandchildren; their application for permanent residence, they say, has been under adjudication since 2016. Why are people like this being singled out for arrest other than raw bigotry? patch.com/new-jersey/h...

These are the same Senate Democrats who lectured the base for years about the importance of preserving the filibuster so it would still be available when Democrats were in the minority

The headline really sanitizes what they did to this guy. Getting stripped naked, inadequate food, sleep deprivation sounds more like war on terror ear rendition than "interrogation."

With the attacks on science and academia by the current administration, if those of us who have tenure don't speak up, it's really hard to continue justifying the tenure system based on academic freedom.

The moment you should have realized who these people were, but apparently did not, was during Trump’s second impeachment, when Senate Dems literally accidentally won a vote to call witnesses and transform the Jan 6 trial into Watergate 2.0… and then reversed it, because they wanted to move on

TPM’s reporting about Peters was more accurate than his office’s statements to constituent callers, just to get a sense of how much Dems are outright at war with their own voters right now

Something that's been clear to me for some time is that a lot of progressive advocacy and politics has overindexed on finding just the right combination of words to say while ignoring the fact that no media ecosystem exists where people might actually hear you say them. New from @mmfa.bsky.social

In which the Department of Homeland Security struggles to answer a very simple question: "Is any criticism of the United States government a deportable offense?" (From NPR here: www.npr.org/2025/03/13/n...)

Chuck Schumer selling us all out will be the last straw for a lot of people. And they need to be organized into organizations and into a project that will outlive the Democratic Party.

Huge!

I think the endless Discourse today about tactics and parliamentary procedure has kind of obscured the actual issue; you either see what Musk and Trump are doing as an existential threat to the US government that supersedes all other business or you don't. Everything else is downstream from that.

I just heard this as well. The entire staff of the National Center for Education Statistics, created in 1867, has been fired.

More of this!

UPDATE—Mahmoud's attorney says they do NOT know where he is. They were first told he was sent to an ICE facility in Elizabeth, NJ. But when his 8-month-pregnant wife tried to visit him, she was told he's not there. They've received reports he may be sent as far away as Louisiana.

When I hear it described, it reminds me more of sinking into quicksand than something tipping over. They're not a binary flip into "irreversibly doomed", they mean sinking faster. Only increasing the urgency of figuring out how to escape (rather than signifying there's nothing that can be done)

When Trump was sworn in, Elon Musk's corporations were under more than 32 investigations conducted by at least 11 federal agencies. Most of the cases are now closed or likely to be closed soon, and the federal agencies are being defanged by DOGE. Funny how that works, huh?
