Ah, sorry George. Totally missed your message. Thanks a lot. Still haven't quite got used to it, although have already changed my title at the bank! 🤣

BTW, I wrote a bit of a story about that day out with the Rwandan Reds, if you're interested.

As problematic as he is, I absolutely ploughed through Roald Dahl's many books as a kid, and into my teens moved to his Tales of the Unexpected and his more grown up books. Each as wonderful as the last, and definitely have him to thanks for my lifelong love of reading.

It was a decision borne of both finding a potential crack of hope in the coming darkness, and mainly a concern that researching the intersection of the far right & climate change/env. breakdown for a living would just be too bleak for my mental health. Kudos to you & yr colleagues for persevering!

This looks amazing. Thanks for writing/editing. I was looking at similar areas during my masters, but was drawn instead to the more positive area of environmental peacebuilding into my Phd, researching opps. for peace & collaboration between countries over conservation of shared eco resources

As I head towards 50, I've realised that maturity isn't necessarily curtailing those hedonistic nights out (I don't), but more cleaning your house and getting in supplies before heading out, so recovery day/s are spent in a clean living room and not needing to leave the safey of the couch!

That is to say, happy new year, everyone. I can't imagine for 1 second 2025 will be in any way better than 2024, but hope shakes off the blow to the head, gathers itself, wipes the blood from its nose and climbs to its feet to go again.

So, i kind of abandoned this because around this time I was hit full in the face with the flu, which led to weeks of fever (& hallucinations), a hacking cough, severe labyrinthitis, and a perforated eardrum that led to an almost complete loss of hearing. Still can't hear owt now, which is worrying.

Less flippantly, without a commitment to the latter, pro-enviromment policies risk alienating working class people, who see prohibitive charges/taxes levied on them while the 1% who actually cause the damage remain largely unaffected. This hardens anti-environment opinion, which the right exploits.

Dec 12: Tender Trap - Leaving Christmas Day
Back on familiar indie territory now, and from 2012 here's Tender Trap with a fun festive song described as 'a ditty about a girl who discovers that her boyfriend is a creationist christian'. And is straight out of there!

Environmentalism is an interesting one. Could 'wanting to stop climate change' really be considered an ideology. Where would it lie on the spectrum? There are cons & socialist environmentalists, with almost polar opposite approaches (eg green capitalism vs tear it all down) & everything in between)

Dec 11: Bessie Smith - At the Christmas Ball.
As a glorious antidote to Hooker's complaining, floating in across the decades from 1925 Tennessee is the extraordinary Empress of the Blues, perhaps with one of the first ever recorded songs about being excited for Christmas.

Dec 10: John Lee Hooker - Blues for Christmas.
The 1st of a Christmas blues double bill, here's John moaning about being broke and drunk and having no woman for Christmas. Standard blues, then, and all the better for it. Though maybe not one for the party playlist.
