This is what’s happening with 1.3C of global heating above preindustrial levels. We’re on track for 3C by 2100. Failure to leave fossil fuels in the ground is a devastating crime against humanity & against all other life on this, our one fragile earth

All the people who minimize the threat of climate change, who call for "climate realism," or who mock "climate alarmism" — even respected voices on "our side" — are wrong. We are in danger.

THE RISE OF END TIMES FASCISM My first major piece of the new Trump era, co-written with @astra.bsky.social. The governing ideology of the far right has become a monstrous, supremacist survivalism. Our task is to build a movement strong enough to stop them. www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-i...

Ended. Up. Ended. Up. endedup

Today’s controversial opinion is that if you are in elected office and deeply believe that nothing will ever change then you need to step aside and let somebody who does believe change is possible have your seat.

This is not a surprise. We know what causes CO₂ to increase in the atmosphere and we know how to stop climate change. We just don’t want to.

A constant reminder that even if CO₂ emissions decreased annually as much as they did during the pandemic lockdown from now to 2030, we still wouldn't meet our emission target to keep global warming below 1.5°C.

Once again a reminder that CCS sounds like a good idea until you learn about it. Not safe & not scalable & not cost effective.

Total global energy demand must decline to effectively address the socioecological crisis. Simply decarbonizing our system for converting ecosystems into products/services/waste is not sufficient.

🗞️One of the many flaws of the Compass: The Commission clings on to outdated economic models reliant on #fossilfuels, and gambles on unproven technologies like hydrogen and carbon capture www.rte.ie/news/busines...

one of key functions of immigration raids & crackdowns is not to actually deport all migrants/refugees but to deepen conditions of social precarity & labor deportability. to make migrants more vulnerable to exploitation from bosses & landlords & banks, and to create scapegoats for austerity policies

I wish we didn’t have to keep telling people that once they’re done with trans people, they’re coming for you next. You should fucking care that trans people are getting hurt all for the crime of existing. You shouldn’t need another fucking reason.

Another non-election in Belarus, not free and not fair. Every day, 1,500 political prisoners in Belarus wake up in cells - for daring to dream of freedom. Belarus has turned into a prison, complicit in Russia’s war crimes. Release all political prisoners. Now. 🤍❤️🤍

“Over a trillion dollars saved” And the crowd cheers mindlessly as the wildfires continue to burn and the glaciers continue to melt. Rise, rise like the oceans and #TellTheTruth, because your life and the future of Planet Earth depends on it 🌎 #ExtinctionRebellion #XR

On CBC last night, I spelt out the moral case to keep on trying, however hard it might be. Defending the living planet is not an option we can abandon. Ultimately, it is all that counts. www.youtube.com/watch?v=qX2V...

Explanation of how the myth of the market being "the natural expression of human freedom" is well a myth. As Right-Wing Libertarians enjoy spreading this myth, we thought it's important to share this explanation.

2024 first year to pass 1.5C global warming limit Multiple clear and powerful infographics in this piece: www.bbc.com/news/article...

Yet another fantastic piece from @climatehuman.bsky.social whose work inspired me to ditch my 10-year career in marketing and retrain as a sustainability specialist - worth sharing and reading: www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Occasional reminder that there’s no, “it’s too late, its over” for anthropogenic climate change. Every molecule of CO2 that doesn’t go into the atmosphere makes a difference. Preventing 0.1 degree of warming makes a difference. Every bit of climate resilience we build together makes a difference.

The worst arsonists are fossil fuel CEOs.

We are literally eating ourselves out of house and home... theconversation.com/over-80-of-t...

For 2025 I think we should just ignore every "AI did this thing" report that does not explicitly state the resource cost (energy/CO2 for training and inference, hardware requirements/e-waste). We just cannot afford burning the planet for technological parlor tricks.

Let's say it again: offsetting is a con. We have to STOP burning fossil fuels in this #ClimateEmergency www.climatechangenews.com/2024/12/19/s...

"There is no need to overcomplicate things: a rise in global temperatures of 3.1C is not compatible with human survival. That is where we are heading, unless we act now. (...) A planet cannot be cooled by warm words; we need fundamental change, now." www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Priorities.

It's staring us in the face: ⚫The 'moderate' EU doing a deal to kill the Amazon rainforest ⚫'Moderate' governments driving forward with ecocide + climate destruction ⚫'Moderate' governments + media pretending COP29 isn't the utter fossil fuel industry-run farce it is. CAPITALISM is the problem.

This looks like a great read by excellent scientists. 'Here we critique the ‘tipping point’ framing for oversimplifying the diverse dynamics of complex natural and human systems and for conveying urgency without fostering a meaningful basis for climate action.' www.nature.com/articles/s41...

I was deeply disappointed by the lack of nature/science/climate/enviro on many major end-of-year book lists—so I decided to make my own! Introducing: ✨🎁📚 The 2024 Holiday Gift Guide to Nature & Science Books ✨🎁📚 Please share: Let's make this go viral in time for Black Friday / holiday shopping!

In this @theguardian.com column, @georgemonbiot.bsky.social perfectly summarises why carbon credits for soil are not a good idea. Yes, we need to protect soil carbon, and we may increase it through good soil management, but promising golden mountains is flawed. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

After the success of my stinkhorn post I'm trying to chase that fungus clout. These are likely staghorns (or stagshorns) just barely poking out of the ground. They're very common here but I'm always excited to see them because they're so strikingly yellow. #fungifriends

This is an octopus stinkhorn I found near the Ślęża mountain here in Lower Silesia, Poland. They originated from Australia and New Zealand and likely arrived in Europe on plants or in soil. And apparently they like it here! Probably the freakiest fungus I've ever seen. #fungifriends

The latest Pew Research report on news content creators paints a damning picture of our skewed information ecosystem.
