This fact is not to be shared outside this room.

Robert Ripley's "Believe It Or Not" included Charles Schulz's first published drawing on February 22, 1937 (the hunting dog, credited to Schulz using his nickname Sparky). Schulz, then 14, would go on to a cartooning career of some renown.

John Ousterhout is presenting a 🔥 topic! Definitely not to be missed!

a friend asked "how do I add a directory to my PATH" and I couldn't find any directions I liked so I wrote up a quick guide: jvns.ca/blog/2025/02...

TIL: You can do mutually exclusive searches in 1 sed command. The ;t means only do the 2nd replace if the first didn't match. E.g. when inserting a ? param into URLS that might/might not have an anchor. sed -e 's/something/different thing/;t' -e 's/$/ - search string not found/'

The most important thing I can tell everyone that I've learned from being a YouTuber who explains how stuff works is that each and every time I thought "this is common knowledge and doesn't need to be explained" I was wrong.

Typing 'minimum' is like playing a game of table tennis on the keyboard.

I use this "trouble" trick for remembering how to do CSS padding (that I learned from @duretti.bsky.social) all the time (the quote tweet is from my reruns bot that posts old comics!)

The part of your brain the creates and the part of your brain that edits are different. When you edit while writing, you switch your mode of thinking and can gum up the works, so to speak, knocking yourself out of your groove. Correct obvious mistakes, but knock out your pages and edit them after.

For those interested in the answers there's a bunch of very knowledgable and helpful ones in the thread below. The gist as I understand it is that the metrics/benchmarks are a series of tests with things like complex math, coding, brain teasers like LSATs. The LLMs are evaluated on their ...

I didn't see the announcement at the time, but Pixelmator is being acquired by Apple!

In other news, my brain couldn’t think of the word for “lazy Susan” and instead I said “rotating Sally” and so that is the new name for it, please update your records.

(creates new folder): TAX YEAR 2024 (leans back satisfied) That's enough work on that for one day

TIL: Exuberant ctags, which I used for a long time on MacOS via Homebrew, is superceded by "Universal ctags". That comes with a whole new set of capabilities and built-in support for lots of popular file types and formats. https://buff.ly/3Ed37Bs I use ctags for doc source files.

I'm of 2 minds about Lynyrd Skynyrd. Many of their songs have a sort of left-leaning subtext. (Drugs are dangerous! Handgun laws are lax!) I saw them open for ZZ Top in Oakland in 1999. A guy at a tailgate party challenged me to fight. I said sure, after the concert. I wonder if he's still there.

I discovered sort of by coincidence that when cramming (like studying for a Jeopardy audition), I can subsist for long periods on nothing but white chocolate and water. I picture the white chocolate turning into neurons in real time.

This just popped up on our M-W app 😭

During COVID, there was a long stretch where every night was movie night and every movie night was popcorn night. The best innovation I found was to fold some "oil absorbing paper" (found at Daiso Japan) in the bowl where I drizzle oil or butter. That avoids any pooled oil & sogginess at the bottom.

It takes Canadian Super Scooper water bombers 12 seconds to fill their tanks! Amazing and efficient! 🇨🇦🤙🏻
