They are more poetically written (with brooding hints of Ted Hughes, say, in the their imagery), and have an incredible sense of place and history. Definitely deserve their place in the canon.

I also read them for the first time last winter - Over Sea, Under Stone definitely the outlier in that it feels more like Nesbitt/CS Lewis, whereas later books, especially The Dark is Rising and Greenwitch, take place in a grander, more mythic space.
