We once thought that economic growth in China would led to huge increases in demand for oil as people bought and drove more cars, industry needed more energy and people took more planes to more places.

LLMs are a vivid reminder that we already live in a planned economy. Investment is not directed by decentralized market signals, but by the conscious choices of a small group of people. www.wheresyoured.at/never-forget...

It's a horribly conventional view, but it's hard to read this splendid set of articles without being struck by how many of the classic ingredients for a financial storm are in the pot www.economist.com/special-repo... (from The Economist). We have: 1/

a great, short account of why anti-NIMBY-ism is likely always to be an inadequate solution to the scarcity of desirable housing, by @dsquareddigest.bsky.social.

Published with @buddyyakov.bsky.social on centralized procurement policies for enhanced geothermal technology. Featured here is our concept of a “public sector offtake warehouse” which can make upfront PPA commitments, pre-pay for output, and later sell the PPA. publicenterprise.org/report/the-d...

The Trump administration is canceling a nearly $600-million contract to the drugmaker Moderna that was intended to develop a shot for humans against bird flu.

"Europe and elsewhere will see more of this, for a while, until there’s no more ice to fall."

1/ The EU wants to bundle R&I funding into a new Competitiveness Fund (ECF). The idea: less fragmentation, more strategic focus. The ambition is right. But whether the ECF delivers will depend entirely on how it's designed. Here are four principles that should guide it. bst-europe.eu?p=38401&prev...

Some takeaways: --Even Republicans nervous about losing jobs got in line. --The bill, as written, doesn't just de-incentivize EVs but makes owning one more expensive. --Automakers are likely thrilled that California's waiver is in the crosshairs. --China isn't slowing down. But now, we are.

It is excellent that the 17th sanctions package against Russia has been adopted by the EU. But now we are waiting for the first sanctions package against Israel.

BREAKING: by an apparent 7-2 margin, the Supreme Court stops the Trump administration from deporting a class of Venezuelans under the Alien Enemies Act

All moral arguments aside, birthright citizenship is a simple, elegant solution to prevent the emergence of a disenfranchised underclass of non-citizens who have been here for generations which *inevitably* emerges when you start trying to pick and choose with citizenship

The Madagascar plan is back

Explosive original reporting about Trump's plans to drastically restructure domestic law enforcement to target immigrants en masse and crack down on opponents.

The European Union is working on its own web index to allow search engines based on the continent to stop relying on Google or Bing for their results. An important step to seriously sidelining those companies.

"directly decreases GDP per capita" in the same way that Bill Gates walking into a bar directly increases the average income. This kind of elementary arithmetic fallacy should have no place in public life

In short, Starmer has taken a massive hit among Labour voters, for no gain elsewhere, while boosting Farage's popularity, including doubling his ceiling among Labour voters. I.e., the political scientists were right, Morgan McSweeney was horrendously wrong.

this is not an exaggeration

the thing is, ‘concern’ about immigration is directly proportional to how much media coverage is focused on immigration, so even assuming Labour reduce the absolute numbers by 2030, the only way that it will make voters happy is if the press decide it should

An excellent summary of China's electrification drive - a true industrial revolution - in the FT today, with some cracking quotes. "This trade war has really emphasised the whole point of energy security and electrification because one of the most-traded commodities in the world is fossil fuels."
