This past semester was the most stressful of my academic career. I had 180 students and about half cheated at some point in the semester They submit weekly reflections where the questions are opinion-based, graded only on effort, don't care about grammar SO MANY students submitted ChatGPT essays

Happy pride!! All trans folks who have created abolitionist/liberatory/trans pride images they'd like to see as stickers email a high quality image with the subject line TRANS PRIDE to movementstickers at proton dot me and I'll make you a free sheet (between 4 and 8 stickers, depending on size)!

Let’s talk for a moment about some of the more subtle ways that the press acts as a mouthpiece for law enforcement. Actor Jonathan Joss was shot to death on Sunday. I don’t know what happened; I wasn’t there. But his husband said a homophobic neighbor shot him as part of an explicit hate crime. /1

New piece out in Punishment & Society: "Groomers, gays, and gender ideology: Why the anti-LGBTQIA+ legislative backlash is a moral panic and why criminologists should care." doi.org/10.1177/1462...

STOP: Don’t panic–organize! @thefreeradical.org and I consulted for weeks with experts about the bill attacking Medicaid for trans people. We find that advocates can still kill the bill or mitigate its impacts through direct action and community solidarity. šŸ§µšŸ‘‡šŸ½ www.madycast.com/p/dont-panic...

Seeing a lot of confusion about the budget's provisions on trans care--it would strip Medicaid funds for trans care (which is awful enough) but it would NOT prohibit private insurers from providing coverage for trans care. It actually does something far more narrow and wonkier

hi, folks! is calling federal electeds to ask them not to pass shitty legislation not doing it for you? i get it. how about helping to bring about positive change that would materially help thousands of trans people? and that's actually possible? do you know about washington state's HB 1971?🧵

this is a letter to the editor from a high school track runner who came in second to a trans girl in a race. her state house rep in maine started talking about it. so she wrote this: www.pressherald.com/2025/05/14/r...

A principled student said in a grad speech that the ā€œonly appropriate thing to say in this momentā€ is to acknowledge the ā€œatrocitiesā€ currently being committed in Palestine. In response, NYU is withholding their diploma + apologizing to the community for the trauma the audience was ā€œsubjected to.ā€

ICE pretended to arrest a 21 yo in order to force her to call her undocumented mother to come leave the house (where she was safe from ICE arrest) to care for her baby. When the mother came, she was abducted and the daughter was suddenly of no interest to ICE. www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

the kid looks fucking terrified, knows the university will probably punitively hold the diploma they've worked three or four years to get, and also knows people have been disappeared recently by fascists for doing way, way less. still says it! just an incredibly fucking brave person

There is not a single congressional district in the U.S. where more than 15% of voters support cuts to Medicaid.

40 years ago on this date, police dropped a bomb on a West Philadelphia neighborhood

For everyone saying this doesn't matter because ICE doesn't follow the law: 1. They want you to think knowing your rights makes no difference when we know for a fact it does. How do we know that? Because Homan himself said people knowing their rights cost then hundreds of arrests in Chicago.

If you are also worried about tariffs and supply chain shortages, and have the financial means to prepare, here is what I have stocked up on and plan to buy soon, plus what I would get if I had kids, a car or a larger home, based on reporting I've read or done myself in the last several months (🧵):

ā€œThe Trump administration has scrapped more than $800 million worth of research into the health of LGBTQ people, abandoning studies of cancers and viruses that tend to affect members of sexual minority groups and setting back efforts to defeat a resurgence of sexually transmitted infections.ā€

ā€œā€¦campaign official said the options do not have to be disclosed because they’re held by the candidate’s limited liability company….ā€ ā€œListen I put the stocks so you couldn’t see them publicly so it’s not a problem.ā€ - Andrew Cuomo

Stand up to him, get rewarded. Try to placate, he'll just demand more. The way is clear

every gender transition is a statement in favor of human possibility and freedom and i’m tired of hearing it talked about like it’s some kind of disease

Hmm perhaps today is a good day to repost the @transjournalists.org Stylebook and Coverage Guide styleguide.transjournalists.org

if the american academy of pediatrics is saying the hhs report was based off an incredibly limited amount of data and distorted the medical consensus, the journalism about the report should mirror that, too. link to full statement: www.aap.org/en/news-room...

The right-wing ideal of masculinity is a guy who refuses to read history, constantly whines about not being the center of attention and immediately becomes trans if a single person asks "hey are you trans?"

I mean honest to God this is where the Democratic base is at right now and everybody in Washington is trying their absolute damnedest to ignore it

for sociological reasons the public messaging from Democratic insiders about abandoning lines of conflict always pretends to be about strategy but it's important to be clear eyed that a core faction of Democrats are *ideologically* opposed to anything vaguely progressive

She’s in jail for writing an op-ed.

So you’re saying we could solve all the financial problems of 379 million of us and impact just 19 households. What an interesting fact. Fun little bit of trivia.

Been a long time since I saw a ratio like this one

It really means so much to Kelly and me that so many people have and are reading Let This Radicalize You in groups. This is exactly what we hoped for. Don't forget that we've created free resources to enhance conversation about the book: www.interruptingcriminalization.com/resources-al...

really brutal chotinering right here www.newyorker.com/news/q-and-a...

The presidents of 200 US colleges declare: "As leaders of America’s colleges, universities, and scholarly societies, we speak with one voice against the unprecedented government overreach and political interference now endangering American higher education." Good! www.aacu.org/newsroom/a-c...

Legit though in 70 years if anything exists, this is the kind of clip students will cite to be like "ah, endemic of the era" no matter how it goes

hate that I have to keep re-upping this, but STUDY AFTER STUDY has shown that TRANS PPL POSE NO THREAT to cis ppl in restrooms & other sex-segregated spaces,Ā those studies are detailed in this essay: juliaserano.medium.com/transgender-... which has been adapted into this video: youtu.be/nK41ePuOmzY

really feel like writing something on how steep tariffs may destroy restaurants that depend on imported ingredients to replicate non-American flavors—and thus spark a movement toward more conservative, blander food scenes throughout the US

A paper I always teach my students: An empirical sound model that indicates harsher conditions either have no effect on crime or, quite possibly, make things worse. Harshness is not about safety. It's about cruelty. With the data to show it.

ā€œTOM HOMAN TOOK OUR KIDS.ā€ That’s what the signs read in Sackets Harbor, NY, where 1,000+ people rallied behind a local dairy worker and her three children after ICE detained them in a cruel enforcement action. Now, thanks to the community, the family is finally coming home. āœļø @tusk81.bsky.social

Trans folks writ large have been warning of *exactly* what was brewing in far-right circles, with the gleeful consent of large segments of liberals. And we were called paranoid for pointing this out. The lawlessness we see now? It was *tested* on anti-trans policies at the state level first.

is this bad?

The GOP COVID Committee report is wild. The virus is a Chinese bioweapon designed by Fauci ... and it was so mild that the US should have taken zero precautions ... and Democratic governors didn't take enough precautions ... and we should have let everyone get it. oversight.house.gov/release/fina...

What's absolutely wild about this is the way they've manufactured a global financial crisis for no reason at all. This isn't 2007-08, where it was a bubble bursting. This is taking a relatively thriving economy and deliberately destroying it in the first three months of your presidency.

It’s sad that it requires courage right now for a university president to file something as straightforward as this, but it does. Thanks to Tufts University President Sunil Kumar for filing this. www.tufts.edu/president/sp...
