i think REM is like Pink Floyd in the sense that they had distinct mini-eras & even their most devoted fans just like the radio stuff (which is totally fine!) but like, anecdotally, i'm kind of amazed by how many fans don't know what Fables of The Reconstruction (or Piper at the Gates of Dawn) is.
