French Senator Claude Malhuret: "Washington has become Nero’s court, with an incendiary emperor, submissive courtiers and a jester high on ketamine... We were at war with a dictator, we are now at war with a dictator backed by a traitor."

Making Australia’s NBN rural/regional telecomunications services dependent on either Bezos or Musk low orbit satellites remains problematic. >> www.afr.com/politics/fed...

Really feels like Trump and Vance's actions on Ukraine seem to be personal, more about punishing Zelenskyy for Ukraine's perceived involvement in Russiagate than international geopolitics. This is why you have repeated demands that Zelenskyy "just say thank you" and "be grateful".

Today we witnessed President Zelensky stand up to a bully. Think about how vulnerable he must have felt. Think about the setup. It was arranged to make him feel powerless. Despite that, he didn’t cower. Don’t focus on the bully. Think about the courage that took & what it means for us & the world.

How could @ourworldindata.org maps be better? Do you experience any annoyances or pain points when you interact with our maps? Is there something you wish you could do that you currently can’t? What’s the next cool thing we could build on top of our maps? Any notes welcome! Thank you 🙏

One of the measures you can take now is refusing to buy from Walmart, target or Amazon More actions to print off and consider

You can ignore climate change. The political system can ignore climate change. But the insurance industry cannot ignore climate change.

One of my party facts is that according to polls, Americans believe foreign aid is about 25% of the federal budget and on average that it *should* be about 10%. The actual number is less than 1%. Foreign aid has long been a boogey man of the right, so it's not surprising they're vilifying it now.

A spine chilling moment from Donald Trump to Michaelia Cash promising strong-man leadership from Dutton. Trump's tariff announcements mean trouble for the global economy and it's the workers and consumers in every country who will pay with job losses and higher prices.

Even if you believed "small government" works to give some people some more $ exactly what "power" is Price or small government going to give to anyone? Individuals acting in their own self-interest or for vested interests are not going to solve the housing crisis, or reduce living costs.

In preparation for an election here in Australia I genuinely support different politics and points of view. But you have to be able to argue your policies will benefit everyone -queer, First Nations, migrant, the young - and not just straight white ppl. And you need to argue it with civility!

Many of my US friends say that they are coping by not turning on the news. I understand it and don't blame them but I guess this is also how descent into authoritarianism works - most people, understandably, just concentrating on getting by in their lives and in their local community.

The school system's response to the executive order threatening to defund schools based on their curriculum is one of the best things I've seen all week. #resist

I've 🤔 about these excellent ?s. I've reflected on what others have said about Musk, Zuck, the far right, loneliness, broken politics, fragmented media & cities. There's no silver bullet. Part of what might work is strengthening & building communities. Imagining more communal ways of being.

In Australia, the concept of "free speech" is even more complex. There's no Human Rights Act (Cth) or constitutional right to free speech - only an implied freedom of political communication. And as explored recently in @joshbornstein.bsky.social's book there is so much hypocrisy on this topic.

This has always been my worst fear about climate change: the worse it gets, the more geopolitical chaos it causes; the more geopolitical chaos there is, the harder it is to cooperate to fight climate change. theconversation.com/a-doom-loop-...

What happens when #climatechange makes more properties uninsurable? When banks can no longer lend to people living in uninsurable communities? What happens to an #economy underpinned by property values when large numbers of homes become stranded assets? @albomp.bsky.social @phannam.bsky.social

“Extinction is a massive, global challenge...but I think it’s really important to remember that we are still having wins...with increased and sufficient support and investment, we could make great strides to repair the damage that’s already been done and prevent further environmental harm.”
