Talkin' about old games, mostly Sega. They let me talk on the HG101 Podcast sometimes by mistake. He/him/they/them, these are all fine.

Politics in my Gex?

I haven't been paying attention to the Gex stuff but looking further, ah yes, another high quality release to spend money on by the most quality of publishers. You have the correct mindset by the way.

I forgot I made a reference to the Puppet Master movies so get excited for that.

Episode two started clicking for me after the first few stages kinda bored me into quitting. Episode three is really good, some grade-A puzzling.

Maybe I'll fire up Splatoon 3 next week.

I need the voice of Dana Gould coming out of a gecko telling me a Gilligan's Island reference to feel alive.

One type of question is earnest curiosity, the other is trying to prop up that thing you like as being very important and you need everyone to know it is more important than whatever you are thinking.

If its a case where somebody just wants to stick with their comfort favorites, that's fine. No harm in that. But a number of folks that fall into those categories will sometimes be very aggressive about how their favorite thing is good and everything else is bad and they'll let you know about it.

I think a lot of modern engagement with media falls into a few camps, with the main ones being "I only engage with this one particular type of media or franchise or whatever and never venture outside of it" and "I am only interested in my personal nostalgia and nothing else" which is a shame.

I've been debating for the past decade whether I should sell off my 3DO collection.

I should say, "interesting" in the sense that they exist, not "interesting" in the sense that they are fun to play.

I own two Japan exclusive games on the 3DO that are based on the "Wacky Races" Hanna-Barbera cartoon. Are they good? No. But they are interesting. Don't buy the 3DO for those games.

More like "CyberdilDON'T"

Its best games could be found on other competing platforms that were cheaper and more popular, either at launch or somewhat later. You really want to play Road Rash? Well, the Genesis has you covered, it's fine, play Road Rash II on the Genesis.

"Should I get a 3DO collection?" The answer is "no" but it is an interesting curiosity. A real case of being a very advanced machine for its time but no developer really knowing how to make a killer app for it, let alone any really noteworthy games. The "Software Sells Hardware" rule in practice.

By 1995 the 3DO was basically on its last leg. It came out at just the right time to be somewhat relevant to the dying 3DO but also show up on the other 32-bit platforms that would launch in the US very soon.

This is what I’m curious about. If nothing changes, I hope newcomers are ready.

Like the only people that heard about it was industry folks and journalists. Consumers didn't hear about that or notice it until like much later, if at all, due to how game news got out during the era. But that event was mythologized to a ridiculous degree.

Everyone likes to talk about how big a deal that first E3 was because of the Saturn shadow drop and the PlayStation "$299" but people treat that event as though it were like later E3 presentations where everyone on the internet was watching it live on stream. The reality was more boring.

That everybody clung to an industry trade show for decades in order to absorb as many video game advertisements as possible and normalized that behavior is really messed up in retrospect.

Everybody's media literacy has devolved to "getting real Boss Baby vibes from this" levels.

Closest thing to a Valkyria Chronicles III localization we got was some of the characters showing up in Project X Zone.

Yeah, like, the media has existed for decades now. It would make more sense to ask for similar titles and not just assume that this recent-ish game is the first one to do a thing.

I'm just wondering why I'm seeing it on sale frequently. It's odd/rare for a Nintendo first-party title.

That all being said, I am kind of treating the Switch 2 in a similar manner to how I would've probably treat a Steam Deck or similar device: let's play my existing library and see how it runs on the go. (Also why is Banana Rumble still Switch exclusive?)
comment in response to post
Sometimes I just want a device that "works out of the box" as it were. And I think I'm just kinda over the whole new release first month (feels more like first week these days) online discussion cycle where I gotta get on games now or else FOMO I guess, so the launch wasn't too troubling for me.
