I am hearing from gov employees who got the OPM email but won't open it because it seems so shady. Things are going great.

Bertil is now retired and doing lots of hiking, but he spent his entire faculty career at a public university (UW), where the late Bill Catterall, also referenced here, also spent most of his career. The overwhelmingly most important funding source for both: The National Institutes of Health.

The opportunity to teach a med school course with Bertil for almost a decade was one of the greatest privileges of my academic life.

Faculty do teach, in my department (a med school department that runs a large undergrad major). We /also/ need TAs to help us with tutoring sessions and grading.

Although there is pretty good evidence that the dimer exists, there is no published experimental data on its structure, so far as I know.
comment in response to post
This is a model of a dimer hypothesized to exist by several groups. The putative dimer would be essentially an inhibited form of the protein, and dissociation of the dimer would be needed to make the protein active in fusion (in combination with two other SNARE proteins, and cofactors).

@jeremymberg.bsky.social are you hearing anything along these lines?

That is a function of basic public policy, not scientific achievement or lack thereof.
