She demands to know how many people left the NIH Clinical Center and said she talked to Jay on the phone about this last week. Jay didn't do his homework & pretends he didn't understand the assignment. Murray is very displeased.

Democrat Murray brings up the Bethesda Declaration: "You've just received a letter from hundreds of your own staff who believe this administration's actions are breaking NIH...I hope you heed their warning. I expect none of them to face retaliation for raising those concerns." JB didn't respond.

Had you seen this, @drugmonkey.bsky.social ?

You were lucky to lose him.

You can't "jet off" to get treatments that are not discovered.

That is false. NCI is the largest funder of cancer research in the world and the Trump administration has requested a ~40% cut to NCI.

I've seen no new FOAs at all. I don't think there have been any. Correct me if I'm wrong?

Indirects haven't gone to a yacht since one scandal forty years ago. And that was at… Stanford.

It was already clear that he was a budding crank when they recruited him from OHSU. Of course, I am an OHSU alum, so would argue that Prasad's recruitment improved *both* OHSU and UCSF Epi/Biostat. ;-)

Yeah, Bhattacharaya is understandable. For many years he resembled a boring, fairly typical soft money med school prof. It's easy to see how he was promoted (I've served on a large med school A&P committee). UCSF Spi/Biostat's decision to recruit Prasad is vastly harder to understand.

So far as I know, neither of them has an endowed chair.

He has very little integrity, Gavin? I've seen no evidence for any.

Jay B says he has not walked away Durbin: "Your budget speaks for itself! The buck stops with you. Don't blame others." Jay B is trying to blame universities (ugh, of course he tries to blame others, he has very little integrity)

'Your budget has a 38% cut to cancer research,' he says to Jay B, and a 39% cut to the National Institute of Aging. He talks about massive, massive NIH cuts to Northwestern University research, on studies on child cancer & other diseases "How can you walk away from cures"?

Baldwin demands to know who is making the decisions at NIH — Bhattacharya, DOGE, OMB? JB: "The changes in priorities, the move away from politicized science, I've made those decisions. Harvard and some other institutions, that's joint with the administration." That's not what he said last month.
comment in response to post
Ranking member @baldwin.senate.gov says that funding and termination decisions are being made "for the first time in history" by "political appointees, most with absolutely zero scientific training or expertise.... like allowing DOGE to decide which grants get terminated."

It just so happens to be a @alzassociation.bsky.social advocacy day on the Hill, so it's a coincidence it lines up with this hearing, I'm told. What do they hope to see from this hearing? "We've worked too damn hard to see this critical research stop in its tracks," one advocate tells me.

They just opened up the room to the public, and it is CROWDED. It appears that the @alzassociation.bsky.social has come out en masse — purple sashes in tow. "I've never seen a hearing this busy," I overheard a Senate staffer say.

The Super Meta Super AI will live in the Super Meta Metaverse, Carl. Won't that make you want to spend time in the Super Meta Metaverse?

It truly is. When I had a bat land on my face while I was sleeping, my primary care provider told me I probably didn’t need post-exposure shots. Ive never fired someone so fast. bsky.app/profile/tcas...
